Cold Shower Challenge!

Profile photo of Alex Eastman Alex Eastman (@alex) 6 years, 5 months ago

I just read all of the 50 life tips That Jordan made, and I found this one to be one that I could do. I am going to try to only take cold showers for 30 days.
So, I challenge YOU to do the same, or at least for a week. I have no doubt it will be hard to do, I take showers that are barely below scalding, so it will take some getting used to.
Post and tell me if you are going to do this too :)

I hate cold shower but anything that doesn’t kill us will only do us good. Maybe I’ll take up the challenge and see what it does to me.

Been following this thread for a few days now and finally decided to join the HE community, so thank you to whoever started it. I’m in my third day and got to say it’s getting easier to just jump right in. I know this is all kind of masochist but I kind of enjoy that initial shock. After the shower I feel great. Will definitely keep doing it for at least another 27 days.

So I just camped at 8500 feet… I showered as cold as the water would go. It felt awesome, but I’m wondering if it is healthy?

Does anyone have some medical insight as to whether it is bad to shower in frigid temperatures. I’m pretty sure my core temperature dropped a little and my skin was numb to the point that I couldn’t feel anything. At some point I feel like blood will have difficulty reaching the brain. Maybe I’ll stick with cold water vs frigid

Wheuu over two weeks :) lol I don’t go with totally frigid myself, but fairly cold is good, and it’s fine once you get used to it.

About to hit two weeks in a few days, I honestly love this experience. I do have trouble though, getting into the shower at the crack of dawn to start my day… just doesn’t mix well sometimes so I’ve been trying the warm to cold regiment every now and then. Does anyone else get the feeling of taking on your day like your Leonidas from 300!? HA I might be a tad crazy and to be frank, it does wake me up like a swift kick in the nuts.

Been taking cold showers for a week now, let’s just say I’ve had severe depression for the past 6 months and after my first cold shower I was feeling incredible. Been extremely happy the entire week, all the sad and suicidal thoughts have vanished. Anyone know why this happened exactly? Anyone with similar experiences?

@vic; That’s terribly interesting, and I’m sincerely glad for you! :] Not sure as to the reasoning behind it though. Placebo perhaps? Maybe more. But honestly, much love to ya <3
Every time I have a cold shower I happen to think of HE haha. &Especially the person who posted about feeling like Leonidas from 300 :p Pretty jokes.

This thread inspired me to try cold showers a few times. I felt energized and in a positive mood. Not that I’m attributing my entire mood to a cold shower, but it definitely gets me out of groggy morning mode.

I also thought about the times in life when you are expecting hot water and it turns out to be cold. I don’t recall enjoying that, but it’s much different when you have the intention of taking a cold shower. It’s interesting how your mindset going into it affects the outcome.

Got to admit not to bothered about the cold showers thing. I’d suggest there is a difference based on where you live. In hot countries I love cold showers, but in snowy old newcastle in a freezing cold house not so much. There aren’t any proven health benefits and there are actually a couple of dangers.

If anyone has heart problems you should avoid them. The cold water has significant effects on systolic and diastolic blood pressure and pulse rate, cold water exposure has been shown to be able to initiate heart failure.

Don’t mean to pour cold water on the topic (lol had to do that sorry)

It’s been 10 days now, and I’ve finally started enjoying them. I take a 2 minute cold shower every morning after doing yoga and at night after training i take a half-warm, half-cold shower and it feels amazing.

Definitely glad I took on this challenge ‘cuz otherwise I would never have stuck beyond those first few days!

Yeah without your guys’s support, I wouldn’t have lasted either Phil! I forget how far along I am now, couple weeks maybe? They’ve definitely grown on me, and if I’m groggy when I wake up, now I look forward to it. Truthfully, I might not go back? My skin is so much better, and I don’t dilly dally in there anymore. I’m very grateful for this challenge :)

these have been awesome. My showers before this thread were so boring! Now I’ve got the whole friggin’ rainbow of temperatures and every shower is like an improvised jazz solo.

Just learning how to stay relaxed while that cold water is pounding on my head has been a great lesson in the whole “pain is in your mind” kind of thing.

Great for body and mind. I’ve been doing it for a few months now. It’s especially useful if you’re tired in the morning, it wakes you up like nothing else.

I’ve also used it to practice g’tumo which is a form of meditation where you control your body heat.

I’ve been trying this out as well. I can’t go into a cold shower; my breathing becomes too shallow. But having lukewarm water running, getting in, and then turning it cold feels fantastic. Early in the morning it really gets me ready for work. I try to take a jog first (something else I’m just starting), but not always.

@sean It gets easier with time. After a while you can step into an ice cold shower without problems.
One of the best things about it is the fact that it makes you breath shallowly, when you practice deep breathing in that cold your breathing improves a lot.

Every single day now. Might be easier for me due to the fact Toronto is currently going through a heat wave (approx. 35-40°C), but I’ve been doing it everyday nonetheless. Getting much easier, I must admit. I enjoy my cold showers fervently :3

I’ve been living without air-conditioning in order to save money. (mind you, I live in Phoenix!) So I actually only take cold showers. Infact, I wish my shower water got colder!

Just took my first one today and although I cheated by having it be cold water similar to drinking water (vs “coldest” water like ice water) it was an interesting experience. Part of what was so great wasn’t just the mental clarity but the feeling of accomplishment for doing something simple yet challenging. I was very aware of how the cold felt on various parts of my body, my torso being the most difficult part. This makes sense as the cold would cause my body to concentrate its heat around the core. I also found that splashing cold water on my body before being completely submerged was helpful.

This reminded me a lot of hydrotherapy techniques, which help the lymphatics, circulation, and detoxification. What you do is sit in a bath of very hot water for a few minutes before switching to a bath of very cold water. This is repeated several times. For more convenience, you can do it with a shower by switching the water temperature from very hot to very cold. I’ve never done it though as it sounds very unpleasant but perhaps once I adapt to cold showers I’ll give it a try.

Hey guys!

I’ve successfully made it through the challenge! I didn’t know what to expect what I started, but it turned out to be one of best experiments I’ve ever done.

It inspired me to write a quick blog post about it.. for anyone who’s done or is doing the challenge, you will quite enjoy it I think!

Let me know what you think!! :)
