Does anyone else hate smartphones – or cell phones in general?

(I’m 43. Maybe this is an “old man rant”, but I need to get this off my chest.)

I don’t necessarily hate the object itself, but the way people are obsessed with their phones I find extremely annoying. It seems that manners have all but disappeared. I can’t count how many times a day a converstation with a co-worker, friend or family member is interrupted by a phone call or text. 9 times out of 10, rather than postponing a reply to their phones, they immediately cut the conversation short as if the message is a matter of life or death.

I’m somewhat of a solitary introvert, but when I’m out in public people seem to be more interested in scratching around on their smartphone screens instead of interacting with friends or being aware of their surroundings. (Many have seen the viral vid of the woman who walked into the mall fountain while texting on her phone. I’m sure this happens more often than you think.) I recently went to a sports bar to watch the UFC. Before, and even during the televised event, the majority of people were locked onto their smartphones – not even paying attention to the fights or talking to their friends. Why even bother to go out in public?

Lastly, it seems that smartphone “apps” have replaced basic skills – and even intelligence. My daughter is 19. When she goes on a trip, I insist that she use a map to plan her route before she leaves. She thinks this is silly because she has a GPS on her iphone – and besides, “none of my friends use maps.”

Don’t get me wrong – I have a cell phone. It’s a flip phone. I can’t tell you what kind it is besides that I have Verizon service. I use it for phone calls and a few texts. However, I keep these to a minimum and try to be polite about how I use it in public. People are more important to me than some gadget in my pocket. I will admit that I saw an app on my daughter’s phone that I thought was pretty cool. It was a “star chart” thing that showed the location and position of the stars, as well as the moon and sun during any time of day or night. It’s not enough to make me want an iphone – I just thought it was pretty amazing. If my interest in astronomy grows more, I may invest in a telescope and other equipment and kick it old school.

Does anyone else see things this way, or am I just being a grouchy old fart?

Back at 2014 i had a close friend which had her eyes stuck to her device every now and then, and it had really bothered me as i couldn’t really engage with her. SO, being the genius I was, I began to do the same, and gradually I’ve became one of those monsters, and I hate myself for it.

Though recently i put my devices down more often, only to find my friends and family (really) MAD because they couldn’t reach me online! The struggle.

I might offer a new, but similar perspective. I’m 15, obviously still in high school, but I hate smart phones, I have one, but that’s because I thought it was “so cool” when I was 13. I have it for my pictures, and messaging my mom. A while back I deleted all of my social medias, because I felt like I had kept putting myself in this box. I hated feeling like I was living my life inside of my phone. I wanted to wake up and see the people and the world around me.

i know this topic is old but because of searching to see if anyone was the same as me, im 19 years old, i remember when phones were just becoming a major thing and my first phone was a pink slide up samsung (wish i still had it *sigh*) i stumbled across this topic which has made me feel like im not the only one who hates modern phones nowadays, it all started in june last year when some water damage made my iphone start glitching like there was no tomorrow, screen not responding then manicly glitching as if someone was tapping the screen, freezing, dialling my contacts you name it however with phones being SO expensive nowadays i just stuck with it and overtime i just started using my glitchy phone less and less to the point that when on a recent work gath i just looked around me at my co workers who were 1-2 years younger than me on average who were all glued to their phones it was mental, then reading up that on average we spend 4 years of our life on our phone just pushed me to buy the new 3310 nokia and get rip of my old iphone. its been one day and already im realising im on social media so much i don’t have the number of people ive recently become friends with because i havent needed it and its pretty sad…’ll be glad in a few months of this tech detox when i can build my communication skills and friendships up properly and not rely on them through the internet and facebook.

It’s just a tool, like any tool it facilitates what the being holding it wants to do. BTW, do you hate something ? Maybe something to investigate/face with honesty…. c.f. Jung’s shadow

You are doing life right. I just paid 50+ dollars for a little phone that could do just about everything, and the instructions were so vague that I couldn’t use it. I kept it a week, then recycled it. Now I use a sensible land-line.

I am 17, have had a flip-phone for the past year and will never go back to a smartphone.

I am super extroverted and think it is so sad that it is actually considered “odd” simply to stand in public without the social crutch of a phone! I do still spend too much time on the internet on my laptop, but I have found that I am so much more engaged with people in day to day life.

I do find however, that it is more difficult to stay in contact with people because apps are the way everyone communicates…. hopefully I will not be stuck in the past (don’t really care too much if I do to be honest!)
