GMO's

What the fuck is the deal? Someone show me some real scientific data showing that these are as bad/not as bad as people say they are. Im not knowledgable enough about the subject to say they are good or bad, and I think these people holding signs outside all day are as uninformed as I am. It seems like the “hip” thing to do these days, but if it IS harmless, than it could do a lot of good for the world. Other than your opinions, I would appreciate anyone who could share some real links to real studies.

Maybe you could explain what you mean with GMO’s?

@filipek, Sorry, I guess I forgot to put that in there..

[from wikipedia]

” GMO (genetically modified organism), is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. Genetic modification involves the mutation, insertion, or deletion of genes. When genes are inserted, they usually come from a different species. In nature this can occur when exogenous DNA penetrates the cell membrane for any reason. To do this artificially may require attaching the genes to a virus or just physically inserting the extra DNA into the nucleus of the intended host with a very small syringe, or with very small particles fired from a gene gun. However, other methods exploit natural forms of gene transfer, such as the ability of Agrobacterium to transfer genetic material to plants, or the ability of lentiviruses to transfer genes to animal cells.

There are controversies around GMOs on several levels, including whether making them is ethical, whether food produced with them is safe, whether such food should be labeled and if so how, whether agricultural biotech is needed to address world hunger now or in the future, and more specifically to GM crops—intellectual property and market dynamics; environmental effects of GM crops; and GM crops’ role in industrial agricultural more generally.”

**Norway, Austria, Germany, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Paraguay, Spain, Italy, Greece, Sri Lanka, Thailand, China, Japan, Philippines, France, Luxembourg and Portugal have put in place GMO restrictions.

**In Algeria, both the planting and distribution of GMO foods is illegal.

**Saudi Arabia has banned the growing of GMO foods and the importing of GMO wheat.

**While the United States still largely allows for the growth and import of GMO foods and does not demand food labeling.

@adamm0ss, I love how you tagged ‘hippies’. Anyway, I think the only way to have credible knowledge is to speak with lab researchers about GMO’s, otherwise you’re only going to get half-assed media opinions or completely incompetent ones influenced by a media. This page looks legitimate enough – http://www.csa.com/discoveryguides/gmfood/overview.php

When I was Vegan I looked into this. Most of the bad things I was “told” were by people you may call “Hippies”. Everything I looked at that was unbiased found nothing bad. Most of what I found was inspiring and fantastic.

I think they are great things. Things that if people gave a chance could I think save the food shortages. They could feed billions who have no food. They could also give land back to nature.

It is just fear that feeds most of the hate. People lack the facts and believe what they want to believe. They see the videos and stories that are written by scaremongers. They ONLY look at stories that feed their need for anti-GMO propaganda.

I was nearly sucked in. I watched some videos that scared the crap out of me. They were so convincing.

@dafunks, “I was nearly sucked in. I watched some videos that scared the crap out of me. They were so convincing.”

Same here! ALMOST got me. But Im going to need some legitimate proof..

@beyond, Yeah, the hippies seem to be the ones (where I live) mainly concerned. And I don’t know them to have unbiased opinions, they kind of band together and… well they are hippies. What made me think about it, was this (hippie) chick came into my work, which is a 5 star resort in Hawaii, and was looking at some of the organic foods we had. She kept going on about how “the spirits” tell her things and how GMOs are this terrible thing, but when I pressed her for some more information about them, all she could say was “monsanto” and “corn” followed by very little information about the two.

@adamm0ss, I think @filipek, was asking you what you meant by GMO’s – you see, there’s an unnecessary apostrophe in there, which completely changes the meaning of GMOs. There should be no apostrophe. Lol.

@chodebalm, Are you fuckin’g kidding me? Do you not unde’rstand because o’f an apostro’phe that s’houldn’t be there? I don’t think thats ‘what @filipek, was talking about, but if you can’t comp’rehend that becaus’e you read the punctuati’on as ownership, than yo’u are a fuck’ing idio’t.

I think the problem people have with it is the fact that there isn’t much research on it and they have been putting it in our foods. They do not have to tell you on a package that there are GMOs in something. They also passed a bill saying that Monsanto (the large distributed of GMO products) cannot be penalized for anything that happens to us from these GMOs. They shouldn’t be allowed to feed that to theopulation

Without researching it and the effects first

http://www.snopes.com/politics/business/mpa.asp.

I got that put of context a bit, I think it says that no court can make them stop growing their products even if tests prove they are unsafe.
