Yo guys, tell me why u think people are so obsessed with the ‘meaning of life’. I think it has not a lot to do with rationality and more emotions. Check out this link on existential meaning: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~parkx032/CY-MEAN.html&h=9AQHI52Nz
I guess I kinda agree with what Tits said. People feel the need to find something to devote their lives too. That could be an ingrown trait, or a cultured trait, but it’s how most people feel. The thing they miss though, is you dont find something to devote your life to, you create something. Life is what you make of it.
Yes, in the bigger picture, our lives are meaningless. UNLESS WE GIVE THEM MEANING. (I had a good quote to put here, and I knew it was from the movie Troy, so I went to look up quotes from there and now forgot it…. there are some good quotes from that movie :P Pretty sure it was this) “Men are haunted by the vastness of eternity. And so we ask ourselves: will our actions echo across the centuries? Will strangers hear our names long after we are gone, and wonder who we were, how bravely we fought, how fiercely we loved?” and it paired with the quote from Achillies “I want what all men want, I just want it more” when asked why he fought.
What I’m trying to say with those quotes is, if you want your actions and your memory to continue after you’re gone, then you better make it. Make your life have impact, have meaning. Touch the lives of others so they will remember you. Touch the lives of millions so you will never be forgotten.
Our lives are meaningless in the long run. But in the short run, in the present, they (our lives) and our actions have huge amounts of meaning. Everything we do affects who we are and shapes us, and how we are remembered. If we want our lives to have meaning, we have to make our days have meaning. There is no sense in searching for a meaning to life, there is none. Unless you make one.
(I feel like I rambled a bit there… I hope you understand what I mean.)
personally i think we have to have some sort of meaning to our lives in order to function. no matter what you believe in you have some conscious purpose to your day or ealse you wouldn’t do anything. you go to go to work because you need money, you buy food because you need nourishment, you get through the day to see the next because you are curious as to what it will bring. we also do this on another lever as what we truly want to do with our lives, what we feel like “we are born to do.”for example i want to go to college study quantum physics and try and prove theories of how consciousness creates reality. we all do this on some level but we need to, it’s what gives our day some sort of meaning. without it we would fall into a reactive state of living in which can be a living hell.
The real meaning of life is nothing like what people want it to be. They confuse it with how can I make my life have meaning, huge difference. But because life is the only thing capable of perception (huge difference from consciousness but that is a different discussion) the meaning of life is simply to perceive. With life there is perception where previously there was none. (you could also say experience, but not much difference there) there is experience where previously there was none.
@vishnu, well even simple life has rudimentary perception, they can tell the difference between light and dark, they have no concept of it but they can respond to it. But perception in us is of our physical bodies and brains, our senses. That is what that rudimentary perception has evolved to. But because constructive relationships exist in atoms and energy (even further down than these) they do not percieve or experience but they possess a conscious compulsion to forge these relationships. Maybe there are scientific terminologies and mathematical equations to explain them but it is a compulsion they have. So consciousness is far more fundamental to the universe than human beings and their perception.
Sentience is something pretty much unique to us, not consciousness or perception, and sentience is to display conceptual thought, show evidence of understanding of ideas. Then there is awareness, linked to perception, and self awareness, linked to sentience but consciousness is not what we believe it is (well I don’t believe it is what people believe it is)
@richard <3explore, i FUCKING LOVE YOUR AVATAR. thats my desktop background. <3 flaming lips.
now, humans are obsessed with the "meaning of life" because they are self-aware beings. ill try to explain this. There was once a caveman, and he looked into a pool of water, and he saw his reflection. When he saw it he realized it was him, and at that moment he realized that he was alive, that he had been born, and that he would die. And he became overwhelmed by the enormity of this knowledge. He began to search for something that would give him a reason to go on, while the knowledge of his inevitable death loomed ahead of him. It was at this point in their evolution that humans felt the need to invent religions, to give a reason for their existance, to give them a reason to go on.
The meaning for most is to be born; live; die. But I think the reason we are alive is because we are part of a bigger life, thus being we are not truly alive for ourselves, and that the meaning of life for us is to keep balance of other life- as contradictive as it may seem, that is my philosophy and that the reasons we believe the meaning of our life must be personal to the human race, is because of our expanding consiousness, spiritualism, faith and religeons. But.. as valid as I find all of my philosophy, I believe that all is nothing, I’m unsure on everything I believe, but I guess I like being unsure and love thinking through our meaning of life, I don’t know why every one else is obsessed with having meaning though, maybe some are the same?
the universe is consciousness, we are consciousness we are the universe perceiving itself.
but as for if we are viewing it from a single perspective in a way yea in a way no, we are all connected through our consciousness but we do not share perceptual reality just influence each others reality in tern we create the realty we live in together as a whole
we like to think we do nothing with our lives and we influence nothing but life wouldn’t go on the same if any one of use wasn’t here, people would interact different’y make different choices have different influences and it would change the course of the future. we look at ourselves as a single drain of sand in a dessert but just as we are one small part you cant have the whole without all those small parts.
not a misconception but different concept, words are subjective anyways there meaning is created by the person drawing upon there experiences using said word. (how it was used, when exct.)
@BrandonXOtaku, you know what I’m talkin bout. Consciousness is all encompassing, not one for each of us but one for all of us, one for everything. Everything energy, matter and life has evolved to is sourced at consciousness, but every idea and thought we have is sourced from our being not from (well not directly from) that consciousness. Our thoughts are processed, filtered and translated by our emotions, experiences and imaginations, by the time it comes out of our mouths, or typed, it is such a Chinese wisper from the origin at the conscious level that we do not even understand each other.
@nikki, don’t apologize Nikki, no harm. Your knowledge is not weak it is advanced and spiritual compared to most people these days, you are a consciencous person, a heart for humanity, I was being an asshole imposing my definition, a definition that people are free to disagree with. As I said, it is not a proven science that I spout but merely a theory, a way I see things, doesn’t mean I’m right but that it works for me, just offering for anyone else to consider.
