Quote(s) That Drastically Changed Your View Of The World

I’ve been reading up a lot over the summer and I’ve never had so many conflicting thoughts and emotions. It seems every good book I read seems to have a great quote/few quotes that tie the entire work together. I’m just coming onto the scene of quotation and was wondering if there were any that deeply changed and altered the thinking of others. So in all, I just want people to share their findings

@moby0darn, Here you are sir:

Whether the world is just or unjust; fair or unfair; karma or no, all we can be is good men, and hope for the best.

Let us discern for ourselves what is right; let us learn together what is good.

Behind me is infinite power, before me is endless possibility, around me is boundless opportunity.

A person often meets his destiny on the road he took to avoid it.

Every exit is an entry somewhere else.

In youth we learn, in age we understand.

If you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there.

To be upset over what you don’t have is to waste what you do have.

The man who is swimming against the stream knows the strength of it.

When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it.

The only person who never makes mistakes is the person who never does anything.

I love the man who can smile in trouble, gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection.

Always give without remembering and always receive without forgetting.

To change one’s life: Start immediately. Do it flamboyantly. No exceptions.

Make sure what you do is a product of your own conclusion.

Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change.

The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails.

Throughout the centuries, there were men who took first steps, down new roads, armed with nothing but their own vision.

Chance favors those in motion.

You must take action now that will move you towards your goals. Develop a sense of urgency in your life.

I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day.

The possibilities are numerous once we decide to act and not react.

Do the thing you fear the most and the death of fear is certain.

Confidence comes not from always being right but from not fearing to be wrong.

Courage is knowing what not to fear.

Where the spirit does not work with the hand there is no art.

The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.

Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is a progress. Working together is a success.

Wise men speak because they have something to say; fools because they have to say something.

Be silent or let they words be worth more than silence.

When you talk, you repeat what you already know; when you listen, you often learn something.

The greatest gift you can give another is the purity of your attention.

Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness is giving creates love.

Ambition and love are the wings to great deeds.

I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious.

Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadows.

A good laugh is sunshine in the house.

Real difficulties can be overcome; it is only the imaginary ones that are unconquerable.

Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.

We are not prisoners of fate, only prisoners of our own minds.

An ounce of action is worth a ton of theory.

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

We must always change, renew and rejuvenate ourselves; otherwise we harden.

Unless you change how you are, you will always have what you’ve got.

To think creatively, we must be able to look afresh at what we normally take for granted.

Knowledge is a process of piling up facts; wisdom lies in their simplification.

We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.

One sees great things from the valley; only small things from the peak.

What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the master calls a butterfly.

Problems only exist in the human mind.

The best way to escape from a problem is to solve it.

The best way out is always through.

If you want to know what a man is like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals.

If you wish to know the mind of a man, listen to his words.

Do not allow yourself or others to be defined by your limitations, but rather, abilities.

Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.

Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.

Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.

People are not disturbed by things, but by the view they take of them.

If you think education is expensive try ignorance.

Nothing is more expensive than a missed opportunity.

Wisdom tends to grow in proportion to one’s awareness of one’s ignorance.

A person who won’t read has no advantage over one who can’t read.

It is what you read when you don’t have to that determines what you will be when you can’t help it.

When you judge another, you do not define them, you define yourself.

A true critic ought to dwell rather upon excellences than imperfections.

It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.

Time moves in one direction, memory in another.

I can’t go back to yesterday because I was a different person then.

A good life is one inspired by vision and guided by wisdom.

Great minds have purpose, others have wishes.

If you want to stand out, don’t be different, be outstanding.

Be still! One cannot find himself, who keeps moving himself.

The best bridge between despair and hope is a good night’s sleep.

Life is a tragedy when seen in close, but a comedy in the long run.

He who knows most grieves most for wasted time.

Depression is good for a man, if only for diversity.

When anger rises, consider the consequences.

He who establishes his argument by noise and command shows that his reason is weak.

The world has the habit of making room for the man whose words and actions show that he knows where he is going.

Efficiency is doing things right; effectiveness is doing the right things.

The whale is endangered, while the ant continues to do just fine.

The goodness of a man is determined solely by his eagerness to show love to others.

Gratitude is when memory is stored in the heart and not in the mind.

I can live for two months on a good compliment.

Morals are human inventions; most of which are simply anecdotal.

Love is a risk we can’t risk not taking.

Wise saying often fall on barren ground; but a kind word is never thrown away.

It is not in the pursuit of happiness that we find fulfillment, it is in the happiness of pursuit.

The formation of one’s character ought to be everyone’s chief aim.

Success lies in doing not what others consider to be great but what you consider to be right.

Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.

Successful people are not gifted; they just work hard, and then succeed on purpose.

Success is not counted by how high you have climbed but by how many people you brought with you.

Success is not to be pursued; it is to be attracted by the person you become.

We all live with the objective of being happy; our lives are all different and yet the same.

You will become as small as your controlling desire; as great as your dominant aspiration.

I count him braver who overcomes his desires than him who overcomes his enemies.

Don’t be afraid to go out on a limb. That’s where the fruit is.

What is not started today is never finished tomorrow.

We were born to succeed, not to fail.

Cleverness is not wisdom.

To write well, express yourself like the common people, but think like a wise man.

Things which matter most must never be at the mercy of those which matter least.

Let a man lose everything else in the world but his enthusiasm, and he will come through again to success.

Happiness is in the heart, not in the circumstances.

If your happiness depends on what somebody else does, I guess you do have a problem.

To be happy at home is the ultimate result of all ambition.

Write it on your heart, that every day is the best day of the year.

Nothing is worth more than this day.

Our happiness depends on the habit of mind we cultivate. So practice happy thinking every day. Cultivate the merry heart, develop the happiness habit, and life will become a continual feast

Happiness comes of the capacity to feel deeply, to enjoy simply, to think freely, to risk life, to be needed.

Three grand essentials to happiness in this life are something to do, something to love, and something to hope for.

Life is a gift, and it offers us the privilege, opportunity, and responsibility to give something back by becoming more.

I have learned long ago that those who are happiest are those who do the most for others.

Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.

Deal with the world the way it is, not the way you wish it was.

It is good to have an end to journey towards, but it is the journey that matters, in the end.

I was raised in a Catholic household, attended a Catholic college, and still consider myself to be Catholic. There was a point in my life where I was wrestling with my political support of gay marriage and my religion’s denunciation of it when the Westboro Baptist Church staged a protest outside my Catholic college, mostly concerning gays. Several students protested with signs next to the the WBC, only their signs said things like “God loves everyone” and “God doesn’t make mistakes”.

When I paired these two signs – which are teachings from the Bible – with another teaching, that God makes all people, I was able to reconcile my political and religious beliefs. Those two quotes, God loves everyone and God doesn’t make mistakes, are what explained to me How I could reconcile my political, religious, and spiritual beliefs. I learned that I could disagree with some of my religion’s teachings, while still living out it’s main messages – love and support others, treat all peoples with respect, don’t lie, cheat, steal, or kill, so on and so forth. This has enabled me to live a life filled with much more love and acceptance than I ever was before, because I was trying to stay true to my religion. I find it amazing that it took the WBC to teach me how to do it.
