What are some of your favorite quotes?

I love quotes and am always looking for new, beautiful nuggets of wisdom or insight. Curious to see some of your favorite sentiments from history. Here are three of mine:

“And we should consider every day lost on which we have not danced at least once. And we should call every truth false which was not accompanied by at least one laugh.”

― Friedrich Nietzsche

“I am nothing.
I’ll never be anything.
I couldn’t want to be something.
Apart from that, I have in me all the dreams in the world.”

― Fernando Pessoa

“The Church says: the body is a sin.
Science says: the body is a machine.
Advertising says: The body is a business.
The Body says: I am a fiesta.”

― Eduardo Galeano

Love is like a friendship caught on fire. In the beginning a flame, very pretty, often hot and fierce, but still only light and flickering. As love grows older, our hearts mature and our love becomes as coals, deep-burning and unquenchable” – Bruce Lee

One that nearly always provides me with contentment is:

Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.

I had to do an article for work recently on Lady Gaga quotes. I had an aversion to this and wanted to get it over with as fast as possible, but I ended up coming upon quite a gem by her that has had me thinking for days.

“I want women — and men — to feel empowered by a deeper and more psychotic part of themselves. The part they’re always trying desperately to hide. I want that to become something that they cherish.”

I have many. I could not find the author of some of them. Get ready for a long-ass post. I have all of these in my journal. I got some of these from HighExistence.

“Every day I discover more and more beautiful things. It’s enough to drive one mad. I have such a desire to do everything. My head is bursting with it”.
-Claude Monet
“We cling to music, to poems, to quotes, to writing, to art, because we desperately do not want to be alone. We want to know we aren;t crazy and somebody else out there knows how we are feeling. We want someone to explain the things we can’t”.
“Do not argue your path with other people, Walk it”.
“Sometimes I am terrified of my heart; of its constant hunger for whatever it is it wants. The way it stops and starts”.
“The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity for sacrifice. Ironically, their virtues make them vulnerable; they are often wounded, sometimes destroyed.”
-Ernest Hemingway
I have sometimes been wildly, despairingly, acutely miserable, racked with sorrow; but through it all I still know quite certainly that just to be alive is a grand thing”.
-Agatha Christie
“Plant your own garden and decorate your own soul, instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers”.
-Veronica A.
“Most people find that being themselves is not enough of a show”.
-Mason Cooley
“Days will pass, and you’ll abandon things you were addicted to, and leave someone, and cancel a dream, and finally, accept a reality”.
-Nizar Qabbani

“I can never read all the books I want; I can never be all the people I want and live all the lives I want. I can never train myself in all the skills I want. And why do I want? I want to live and feel all the shades, tones and variations of mental and physical experience possible in my life. And I am horribly limited.”

-Sylvia Plath

“God, but life is loneliness, despite all the opiates, despite the shrill tinsel gaiety of “parties” with no purpose, despite the false grinning faces we all wear. And when at last you find someone to whom you feel you can pour out your soul, you stop in shock at the words you utter – they are so rusty, so ugly, so meaningless and feeble from being kept in the small cramped dark inside you so long. Yes, there is joy, fulfillment and companionship – but the loneliness of the soul in its appalling self-consciousness is horrible and overpowering.”

-Sylvia Plath

“If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.”

-J.R.R. Tolkien

“To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance”.

“The louder the voice the smaller the intellect”.

-Ernest Newman
