Yea, But Why?

 yoinkie (@yoinkie) 6 years ago

I was hanging out with this little kid the other day. Hes about 10 years old( I dont know, hes not my kid and im not a doctor. He looks 10). He starts playing the “why” game with me; you know the one, where you ask one question, and the other person responds, and you keep asking “yea, but why?” This game is usually annoying as hell, but this little bastard proceeded to blow my mind.

billy: What is gravity?

me: Its the force in the universe that attracts things to other things that have mass

billy: Yea, but why?

me: Well, the smaller object will always be attracted towards a bigger object. Everything in the universe has gravity.

billy: Yea, but why?

me: The space around an object with mass is warped or curved, causing gravity.

billy: yea, but why?
(I dont know why I kept going, I knew this kid didnt understand but I was way too high to care)
me: well, imagine a blanket, and me dropping a bowling ball in the middle. Now throw a smaller ball on this blanket, and it will rotate around the bowling ball in the middle. Boom thats gravity right there.

billy: Yea, but why?

me: because…well…because thats the way its always been? You know what, I dont know. Why is the space around an object curved? There is no reason for it, it just happened that way, and everything in the universe decided to follow suit. Good question kid, I guess its kind of like asking why humans exist.

Billy: Why do humans exist?

me: Evolution! you will learn about it soon, I think. Everything started from a single thing.

billy: yea, but why?

me: because thats what needed to happen for life to exist!

billy: yea, but why did it happen?

me: If I could answer that for you, I would win a nobel prize. Youve stumped me again, kid. If you keep asking why, sooner or later you get to a question that no one can answer. The mysteries of the universe are reached. But hey, atleast I know why humans exist today!

billy: Why do humans exist today?

me: Because, we are all built of these little things called atoms! They come together to create molecules, compounds, and ultimately, life.

billy: yea, but why!

me: Well every atom has a charge, which either attracts or detracts other atoms! You know what a magnet is right? Yea, think of it like a magnet.

billy: yea but why do they come together?

me: because of the charges!

billy: yea, but why do they have charges that make them come together?

me: Because..well, thats just the way things are? You are asking questions that we have been searching for for a long time. These questions, they are some of the main reason why people believe in God; to answer questions we do not have the answers for. your tripping me out, kid. How would you like it if I asked you these tough questions? huh? So billy, why does gravity exist?

Billy: So humans dont fly off the earth!

me: Ok, smarty, why do humans exist?

billy: Because earth would be lonely if they didnt!

me: OK, then, why do atoms have charges that make them come together and create the building blocks of life?

billy: Because its their job!

Me: Shut up Billy.

Billy: YEA, BUT WHY?

this reads like one of your creative writing exercises . . . but anyway you gotta go deeper than one-sentence “answers” with kids. and you have to pose questions, talk to them like you were talking to an equal so it’s not a one-sided dialogue, but instead you and the kid are thinking together, sharing your perspective and knowledge with each other.

way too many grown-ups think that kids are full of questions and adults are supposed to provide answers. we’re both full of questions, and we’re both short on answers.

My three year old asks these sorts of things all the time and I always give him developmentally appropriate detailed answers. He is so smart, and I really do believe it’s because I always encourage him to think, ask questions and be creative.

@hollowinfinity, We’ll see about that. :P

We learn the coolest/best things from kids!

I pretty much like to scare children. It depends on how much questions they ask. If they ask me why humans exists, well, simply because I haven’t killed them all yet.

This is pretty much the same situation. :)

Kids grow up to be annnoying people. Remember that. I was once a kid, for example.
