Your First External Influence

What was your first external influence that lead you to think or view your world from a more ethereal perspective?

Mine is a book called “Mefisto In Onyx” by Harlan Ellison that I read when I was 10 years old (though I believe it’s aimed at an older audience). It’s about an empath, telepathic Rudy Paris, “His friend and one-time lover, deputy district attorney Allison Roche, wants him to slip into the mind of serial killer Henry Lake “Spanky” Spanning because after successfully damning Spanning to the electric chair for 29 murders, she has fallen in love with him and wants to be sure of his innocence.”

It’s a short read, about 90 or so pages, and each page was gripping. The way the character describes people’s minds as “landscapes”, and goes through the motions of smoothing them out and altering the land to influence outward reality. This, I believe, was my first conscious awareness of telepathy/empathy and what their role was.

This book was definitely one of the first things in my life that opened my mind to something other than “What you see is what you get”.

Do you have one?

Thank you :) I’ve been looking for some more material to broaden my mind. Would you recommend the documentary or the book first?
