I have been a HighExistence addict for years and I walked into my abnormal pyschology class thinking the exact same sentiments as this article, and ready to shut down the DSM. Within a few weeks, I learned that nearly every diagnosis in that book MUST include
    -distress
    -dysfunction
    -danger.

Meaning that plenty of people who violate social norms are not dubbed with a DSM disorder.
People who are distressed by their minds and cannot function in their choice of lifestyle to the way they would like to seek help. And the DSM basically exists for insurance purposes. Insurance would not cover mental health problems unless a diagnosis has been given. The whole field of psychology and psychiatry knows that the DSM is incredibly flawed, thats why they keep pouring funding into making new ones.
There certainly is a problem with society that is making people anxious and depressed.
There are lifestyles better suited to people with mental disabilities or a disorder such as “bipolar,” and I hope those people seek those lifestyles if they can…
but the world’s not going to magically accomodate those people anytime soon, and from a personal history with some fuckin undiagnosable mental disorder that has led me to so many terrible places, I am grateful that insurance has been able to cover the therapy that sustains me today.
Most people seek mental health because its making them distressed. Mental health patients who are rounded up against their will are usually dangerous to themselves or others. I’m not defending the whole DSM system but there is a huge difference between mental stability and social rebellion.

Men are objectified too. They are expected to be those superheros and all the other masculine characteristics, and are looked down upon as much as women when they fail at their own genders expectations. I agree with much of this article but as a woman, acknowledge that men don’t got it as easy as we think they do.

60 minutes featured a neo nazi segment on sunday night. they had tons of videos of these get-togethers, which involved a little politics, and a lot of barbeques, birthday parties, and games. the neo nazis knows that people are so starved for community and use that as a powerful force to gain recruits, as have many organizations/cults in the past.

i need a community! ive never fit in to any groups or cliques growing up, and it has been the bane of my existence to this point. theres nothing i want more than to feel i belong in a community, although not desperately enough to become a neo nazi!
