Whoa, your intense reaction to this says more about you than it does about the author… I read this article and saw nothing of the sort in it. You’re seeing your own biases reflected back at you.

Hey Jon, this was a great and memorable article. Read it yesterday and it’s popped up in my mind a few times since then. Thanks for sharing!

I laughed at “holy oceanic cosmos”! and the vagabonds living in shanties, hahaha.
And I love your idea of cutting off from the internet and people when you need to learn a new skill or complete a creative project. It’s one of those things that I know is a good idea, but I can’t seem to get myself to do. I am going to try this some time.
I do want to hear more about this, so I hope you’ll be writing more articles about it. :)

I’ve read this before but I’m back to comment. “Teaching yourself relevant skills and hitting the job search like a hell-bent juggernaut is a reliable, systematic approach to finding online work. ” THIS!!!
I started applying for writing jobs on craigslist on a complete whim, just to see if I could do it. I had no experience whatsoever so my hopes weren’t high, but I knew that if I couldn’t do it I was going to be really fucked financially. As one of the comments here mentioned, desperate people are more successful at times because of their sense of urgency. I sent out a minimum of 15 applications a day for a week or 2 and it paid off.
Now I am slowly building my skills (learning SEO, keyword integration, etc) and still sending out lots of apps every day. Most of them don’t get answered because I have barely any experience, but I’ve had a bit of luck with some. They key is to just keep trying. I have been almost obsessive about trying and it’s been working.
A lot of the people on this site are native English speakers who have decent writing skills. That’s all you need to land certain freelance jobs. The pay may not be amazing at first, but you work your way up.

Way too relatable.

Awww you guys got me really nostalgic with the screenshots of the old versions of HE.
I got here in 2011 and was instantly so enthusiastic that I had found other people that think about the same things I think about! Everyone I know well in real life has heard me rave about and try to explain High Existence at least once. I have heard responses ranging from “that sounds amazing” to “sounds like a cult to me.” haha. I like that this place got me to question my beliefs, and taught me to stop getting so offended all the time.
I’ve met a lot of people from here in person now and it has changed my life in the craziest of ways, ways I never could have imagined. I have been in Europe traveling for 5 months now as a direct result of HE connections. I am very interested to see which direction this site takes.
Good luck to you Jordan, I know that whatever you move on to will be just as great, and I hope to stay in touch :)

The nipple thing is so true. I came to France and saw an oversized magazine cover displayed outside a shop showing a woman with her boob out and was in shock.

This really makes me not want to go to work today.

free room and board in exchange for work yo!

People’s most common excuse to not do it is money. I really don’t think it takes that much to travel, although I don’t know for sure yet This year will be my first experiment with the “work half the year, explore the other half” idea. Unless I am way way off in my calculations, what I make in about 5/6 months should be more than enough to fund some pretty awesome adventures.

lol. this is awesome.
2013-09-10 @ 05:32:16
It can be really scary…. I’ve decided I don’t like doing it around a bunch of people in a “party” type environment. I’d rather be in a quiet environment or doing something creative.
2013-09-10 @ 05:31:23
It took me a while to get into them for the reasons you described in your article. “they are just….. weird” is what I would always say when my boyfriend would play their music, but slowly I came around and now I can’t get enough, and you did an awesome job describing why! I love the silliness and the synchronized jumping. Plus the fact that no matter how crazy they get they are always 100% on point with each other musically. It is truly amazing. Page is my piano idol. Great article! I really like your writing style too. :)

Jordan, your honesty is refreshing. I miss the days when you weren’t too busy to chat over e-mails, but I’m so glad to know it’s because you’re doing the great things you’re capable of! <3

I’m definitely going to try this out while I paint. Thanks for the idea and links. :) Do you know of any sources for good psychology audio material?

I have a journal entry about this. It makes you appreciate all the things usually taken for granted.
2011-08-26 @ 12:06:09
I’m reading some Plato right now and he talks about concrete things being merely models of universal truths… They are not real but just beliefs based on the flux of reality. Your first couple paragraphs remind me of that. Good stuff.
2011-08-26 @ 10:22:34
Donnie Darko would disagree with you Jordan ;)
2011-08-22 @ 18:09:55
Wow, the part about the Coca Cola advertisement really conjured up a strong image and impression for me. Well written and inspiring.

Well, you just summed up my life philosophy in 2 words. Succinct and eloquent.
2011-08-09 @ 12:54:58
I’ve seen 9 of those. I can’t, for the life of me, figure out what the big deal about Snatch is! I have yet to meet a person besides me who doesn’t like it. One of the most overrated films of all time, in my opinion. Other than that I definitely agree with your picks and will be checking out the ones you listed that I haven’t seen yet.
2011-07-12 @ 09:56:37
I love your writing style! Inspiring.
