I recently read a book by Stephen King( a famed horror writer) about why we humans love to scare ourselves. His idea is that we use horror movies (false reality) to deal with the physical world (reality).
At the end of a really scary movie, we can say to ourselves: “Wow that was horrifying, good thing it’s not real.”
This allows us to keep our fears in check, by using fake horror as catharsis. So when we see atrocities and things in the real world that we find scary, we can better deal with them because we have more scary experiences in our memory through the movies/books.
I subscribe to his theory but I also have my own; It’s all about the adrenaline rush! Horror movies and books make us feel alive!!
