I had a similar thought about the law recently. If you imagine the collective morals of a ‘society’ as being like a circle or wavy shape with blurry edges (to indicate differences in belief, but general agreement), then the law is like an etch-a-sketch trying to recreate that circle using only right angles and straight lines. And thus it’s only an approximation of people’s morals, and often it’s lagging decades behind.
But I’d say this society revelation isn’t that huge. Surely we all know tons of interesting people who society might deem weird, but they’re doing it for themselves. These are almost always the most inspiring people I’ve met.
