@kayla147258, the short answer is no, you don’t need a college degree to get a decent job or live comfortably. I wish when I was younger nobody had sold me that crock about college, and just said find something you like and learn to do it EXTREMELY well. Then you can start your own business around it. Instead, I have a college degree in something I don’t like at all, and am at square 1 with the stuff that I really like. I wish I could have a reset button.
And I second what @xyver, said – I have a Bachelor’s in Business Administration, and it isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on. Not to mention I absolutely can’t stand the thought of spending the rest of my life in a corporate environment.
“I would love a job that requires some travel, I LOVE being outside, and I love astronomy. (I could have gotten a degree in astronomy if I could pass algebra) I feel stuck and don’t know where to start.”
Look for jobs based around those things that you like and see what’s required. You might find that it does take some college after all, but if you like what you’re doing and aren’t overly concerned with money then I don’t see the problem. It sounds like you know what you enjoy already, and I would say the first thing you should do is know yourself and what you love to do. This will help you decide what action to take, and if you do in fact decide to go to college, it will save you money and time. The next step, I’d say, is that if you truly love astronomy, you might have to tough it out through algebra. It’s true that nothing good comes easy, so you may have to work through some tough courses before getting to the ones you really want. Best of luck to you!
