I would recommend trying meditation around your normal bed time/when you would like to start your “rest” period, and then go until you absolutely must sleep. If that point never comes, then see how you feel the next day. If that point does come (and chances are it probably will) then just sleep the rest of the night to your normal wake-up time. This way, hopefully over the course of several months, you gradually trade off sleep for meditation.
Even if you don’t get the whole way, and end up with say 3 or 4 hours of sleep a night, if that time period is sandwiched with meditation (as I would suggest you meditate a bit upon waking up as well, if you actually do fall asleep) then I think you’ll do just fine. And not only that, but you’ll probably see great benefit as well.
