Advice for traveling on foot in the US

 Roota2thatToota (@Roota2thaToota)7 years, 8 months ago

I’m looking to maybe start an adventure on foot around April this year and I’m trying to get some advice from others who have maybe done this already. I’ll be starting in Florida and I have no idea which direction I’ll be heading. I will have some money saved up for emergency purposes but I’d also like to find ways to make money along the way. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I’m also open to meeting some people who are willing to join me.

If you make it to mass you got a place to stay, as long as you’re cool

On foot? wow good luck with that, are you planning on staying inside hotels and such?

Maybe OP should consider going by bike and hitching instead, so more ground can be covered each day.

I’ll be spending most of my nights in a tent depending on how things work out. I’d prefer to not spend money just to rest my eyes.

Would definitely recommend going bike touring. It would allow you to see far more than walking and relying on hitchhiking. You can carry your tent and supplies in panniers. Plus you can always lock up your bike and walk anyways

Yeah but my only problem right now is affording a bike that’s decent enough to survive the kind of trip I’d want to take. I also don’t want to be dealing with flat tires and mechanical issues while I’m out.

@roota2thatoota, whoa I was just talking about wanting to do this the night before last. I considered just going up and down the CA coast.

I love the west coast but I really would like to see the south and mid-west from an on foot perspective.

@roota2thatoota, the midwest gets a lot of hate but I live here and love it. :D I think the south is awesome too, at least the parts i’ve seen.

I suggest to go west at some point, not just north. As far as finding jobs along the way Im not sure of how to go about that. But if you are looking for cheap places to stay you can look into couch surfer (a website I heard of) so you can save money. You could also just carry a backpack with a tent to camp out places, that would be awesome.

This sounds awesome! I have never done it before, but my advice would be to take a camera and especially a video camera with you and upload videos to share with the world on YouTube. You will no doubt meet some awesome people, see some great things and learns some important life lessons. I for one would definitely want to see what you get up to :)

Wow. Wasn’t expecting many responses but this is great! I will be taking a backpack and boots along with a tent just in case. I won’t be staying in hotels but if I meet people along the way who can share a place to sleep it would be great. I’m also open to hitchhiking to cover more ground but on foot I’ll be able to see and experience more than I would sitting in a car for hundreds of miles. I’m not planning to get anywhere in particular. I just want to be on the road.
