Any pointers on my "spiritual search"?

Alex (@alexnilsen2)5 years, 6 months ago

I know I’m already barking up the wrong tree by referring to it as a “spiritual search”. After all, we’re supposed to stop searching, right?

For some years I’ve been trying to look deeply into my self, some times more consciously than others. But what I’ve found have really astonished me, and that is how much I’m actively trying to attach to my surroundings. An example is when I see an awesome picture or pattern, I might seriously consider tattooing these on my body (I’m really into tattoos), instead of simply gazing. Other times I might listen to profound teachers talk about [insert topic], but instead of really taking in the information, I’d rather memorize parts of the speech in order to sound profound as well. I’m always trying to adopt my surroundings to my personality.

I might try to improve, but I realize that perhaps I’m burying myself deeper in to my ego. I’m getting tired of all these ego trips!

I’m not expecting the world from this post, but I would definitely appreciate some relevant pointers if you have some. Pointers that will lead me towards being more genuine in my “search”. I think (hope?) experiences from other people can be extremely relevant.

I would like to end with thanking all of you wonderful people that are contributing to HE. I think this is a truly remarkable corner of the Internet, and definitely a tool for increasing awareness about higher consciousness in all of us.

Best to you all.

I am definitely no expert but I think you are on the right path with becoming aware of that fact that you are trying to “attach” to your surroundings. The first step in changing anything is identifying what we want to change after all.

A good step might be trying to figure out why you feel this need to attach yourself to your surroundings. Acknowledge the thoughts about it and try to break them down and figure out the cause of it.

Once you know why you are doing it you can decide if you want to change it and figure out how to change it. At the very least you will know yourself a bit better for it.

“Eyes Of Existence”

As I walk along this journey
bumping into various different universes,
Catching a glimpse of each beam of light.
Scrutinizing each glare
while being sucked into a realm of….
“Who may I be?”
Gazing at my existence,
as it handed me my heart confirming my actuality.
Blossoming a vision of desire-desire for universal love.
Desperately falling into the hands of faith…
Helping gather different natures of fluidity,
creating lucidity within each source.
Lending my heart in hand to every wave of light reflecting in unconditional love.
Dripping upon each entity
made to walk this journey.
Sculpting a realization for they shall never be forgotten.
As for this dream is ours and together only shall it take root and breathe existence.

Just as Leond said, you are already taking steps by acknowledging your patterns and behaviours! Just being aware alone is enough to create new habits, as you can catch yourself when you are repeating a behaviour you may want to work on. Everyone has found themselves doing the things you have listed, fitting in to your environment is simply a part of the human condition. But when you take a step back and really evaluate what your surroundings really are, you may begin to understand that there is no need to fit in. Because your environment is a projection, it’s all your perception, your ideas, your thoughts your experiences shape the world around you.

The amazing thing is is that thoughts can be changed simply by realizing them and then thinking new thoughts! If you go about your life thinking you are fat for example, then you will always be fat. no matter what anyone says to you, no matter how you look or how much you weigh, you will be fat. Because it is not about the actual fat on your body, it’s about your mind and what it tells you to think. If you acknowledge your pattern of thinking you’re fat and having it ruin your day, and then replace that thought with “Wow, I’m a really awesome person”, and move into that direction, then you are no longer fat. You have freed yourself. You have realized the truth; that everything we see, everything we touch and feel, every relationship or experience we have, is completely influenced by how we view ourselves.

Be gentle with yourself, always. If you can, remind yourself everyday, be gentle with yourself. It is in no way shape or form your fault that you think or see things in the way that you do, ever. Do not shame or blame yourself for anything as we are reborn every second that we spend living on this earth. You will always have the power to change something within yourself, you just have to be willing to go there, as it may be painful. Spend time with yourself and don’t punish yourself if you find yourself moving backwards, or slipping up, because that is part of your journey. I know you can do it.

Hey dude – I’ve felt the same and here’s what I think about it

I often think the idea of accepting an ego is confused with the idea of transcending an ego. What I mean by this is.. we’re familiar with the idea of spiritual quest and exploring our own consciousness – and we think the goal is to transcend the ego – So one day we won’t be so socially conditioned to want the latest Nike shoes for example, or care what people think of us etc. We consider it basic and narcissistic.

Like you say, you automatically find yourself thinking “how can I relay this information to my friends to appear profound” when you watch a video with a profound message. Heck I’m guilty of that! I think we all are to a degree.

I genuinely think that accepting the ego is way easier, way more fun and not at all less ‘spiritual’. To just be mindful of yourself when you think these thoughts is enough. To the point where you can laugh at yourself is the goal! This will teach you to be humble :)

I think you hit the nail on the head with being less ‘spiritual’, spirituality today just looks like a chill religion where you have to buy special mats and cushions and stuff.

The idea about seeing the “monkey chatter” in our heads for the limited perception that it actually is, instead of trying to make sense of entire existence with it, seems a lot easier. The only thing meditation has taught me is that my mind drifts all the time. It cannot, under any circumstances, be stopped. It’s time to just have fun with it :)

Hey, what you said about always thinking of tattooing the amazing things you see and memorizing speech to sound profound, I used to have a mindset like that as well. I used to think of it as though I may be missing out on simply experiencing to its fullest. In retrospect, I don’t think that this type of thinking should be eliminated, but it should be given its own time. If you are focused on some ulterior motive, you can’t focus on what is happening in front of you.

Personally, I think this kind of thinking is just a lens that you see things through. Being able to look through different lenses is an important skill to have, but sometimes the best skill to have is to be able to put the lens down. Because nothing compares to experiencing something while you are present.
