Anyone here live in an earthship? (Advice?)

Brandon Phillips (@brandonphillips) 8 years, 10 months ago

A friend and I are planning on building one. Can anyone provide me with some information to know before hand, and tips on gathering the supplies/materials and planning? Any links to good sites about earthships would be useful as well. Thanks!

@brandonphillips, The bigboss Jordan is heavily involved with Earthships, we have an Official thread dedicated to this, check it out https://www.highexistence.com/topic/valhalla-movement-update-11813/

@brandonphillips, I work at a tire company and the one thing I can tell you from personal experience – finding tires should be no problem! A lot of autobody shops will give them away because then they don’t have to pay a fee to trash em. So, yeah, scrap tires, easy.

@brandonphillips, good for you for wanting to build an Earthship. I watched the Michael Reynolds documentary on Earthships on YouTube awhile ago, and have read some of the updates about Valhalla and am quite impressed, especially in regards to “off the grid” not necessarily meaning “low tech”. I’d love to move into an Earthship when I move out, because renting or even owning a conventional home doesn’t make sense – all you’re really doing by that is enriching the landlords and the utility companies, and I think bills are one of the main reasons why people feel stuck in unfulfilling lives – it’s hard to devote time to your passions when they don’t pay for ever-increasing bills, meaning you have to take a job you don’t like but pays, yada yada. Self-sufficient is the way to be.

Thanks for the replies. I definitely have some research to do. I want to get the best understanding of everything about earthships before I start.

@brandonphillips, I built myself and still not finished. Start with one room (one U) at a time Don’t go all out like i did and be overwhelmed. Good that you found someone to help for it motivates oneself tremendously. Walk away from negatives that say you can not build. I mean RUN away from them. Craigslist and habitat for humanity received a lot of my supplies. And dumpster on construction sites. On the glass Goto the source or manufacturer. Cash talked to those people.

@brandonphillips, Work or´╗┐ stay in an Earthship Near Buena Vista, Colorado. Or go join a build for a week and see if you like it. Also have a Meet up group http://www.meetup.com/Earthship-Colorado/events/101367902/?_af_eid=101367902&a=uc1_te&_af=event Or try a Donnation site and get people to donate to your cause like i doing. Got a $1.00 so far. lol

I would advise looking into another construction method. I started working on Earthships in ’95, and I can tell you what’s wrong with them, and what’s right. My advice would be to look at some, live in a couple, and then build something completely different, like a good straw bale, rastra block, papercrete, or any superinsulated, passive solar design with modern, science-based engineering. Mike Reynolds and SSI are a bunch of clowns, and it’s sad they’ve gotten so much attention. Hopefully people will move on to better designs before too long, and we can leave Earthships in the ’70’s where they belong.

We’re 3 adults looking to partner up and move to Colorado. Our goal is to create
a sane lifestyle. We come with a small internet business which is growing and other
assets.
