I’m from the bay area (NorCal) and to me it feels as though the underground rave scene is dying. Especially now that the “Rave” scene is starting to grow with expensive legal parties. I’ve found those parties are closer to the club scene then the spiritual rave experience I’m used to. My boyfriend and I have been planning parties but I still feel as though the underground just isn’t what it used to be? So I’m wondering how many people on this forum have experienced the underground and if there’s anyone in the Bay Area who would be interested in helping bring the scene back? Renegade season is approaching, I want to change this lack of inspiration I see around me, anyone down?
For anyone who may know. Currently I live in Michigan and once the school year ends I will be moving to Ohio to work at Cedar Point. Does anyone know where I would be able to find a local underground? I would very much enjoy finding a spiritual rave scene.
@dancingscyphozoa, Dude what are you talking about? Have you been to ecstatic dance? That shit is so spiritual and trippy. Contact dance is fun to watch – Have you been to 1015 Folsom on a good night? Was at the ‘woom’ warehouse party in Oakland on Friday, I was commenting on how glad I was that the whole concept of ‘gettin wasted at a party being cool’ thing is finally done with. the trap music scene is bringin back the whole tribal dance around the camp fire scene. Worship the FIRE now worship the BASS. Ritual on Thursday is a great local party in SF with amazing local beats and artwork. I couldn’t be more grateful to live in the bay.
@heavydreamz Thanks! I’ll definitely try and get out to these, although when I say underground I’m referring more to a party from 10 or 11pm-5 or 6am in the middle of no where, where some people threw up a tent or just brought their dj equipment/ speakers and people can dance their heart out and be themselves. Sometimes with drugs such as molly and or lsd, but not always. It was a place where the local EDM producers can show what they’ve got. These kind of events draw some of the coolest people I’ve met but the old website I used to go to has died and it seems the parties have too.
I don’t really want to go to a club for a “rave” because when I have in the past those are always kinda crappy (no offense) but the vibes just aren’t there. Same with massives. No offense, I’m sure these parties are great and i’m definitely going to check them out but i get the feeling they’re just not what I’ve been craving
@theskafish No, the undergrounds I have in mind wouldn’t play “Rave music” at least not whats considered Rave music now. It would mostly be electronic of some type though if I could find enough people who wanted to throw something like this we could play whatever we liked.
@dancingscyphozoa, if you show up to these regular productions you get on the ‘scene’ and can find out about more local ‘underground’ events. the 1015 event is a production by an-te-nae, a local producer who is on the front of the local scene here. i went to a renegade camp out festy in the santa cruz mountains a few weeks ago called’ frosty fractals, my homie put it together for its second year. its beautiful to be a part of something like that from the ground up. finding things like that you really gotta meet the people, gotta start somewhere. but it sounds like your looking for something more specific, maybe start your own youll have better luck.
@heavydreamz I’ll definitely be going to the events you’ve suggested to try and meet more people with like ideas but with one of them, you have to pay $40-$65 per ticket and looks like it will be rather crowded (Which is rather scarey for me) and the other specifically says its drug free. Nothing against drug free events but it doesn’t give me much hope for the kind of people i’ll find there. That’s hecka cool, I’ll be going to my first camp out this June -Camp Marijuana (at Camp Arijuana) which i am very much looking forward to :3 and Yeah! I’m trying to start my own string of parties, that was part of the reason I started this thread, the other being that I’m interested to find out what the underground scenes in other states are like.
Not underground, but Bluetech, infected mushroom are going to be in san fran on the 20th, as well as Alex Grey and a DJ set by shpongle. Seriously considering going to this.
@dancingscyphozoa, the 1015 event i posted is definitely a larger event which is why im skeptical of going, that club gets extremely packed despite have 4 stages and many other rooms to wander. Although spongle is gonna be playing and everyone will be on that higher plane if you know what im sayin ;) Youre right the mellower nights are the way to go, some of the best nights of my life there!
Ecstatic dance is more of the learning environment, i suggest going to a couple dances and getting to know exactly what the scene is about.
Check our ritual thursdays
@dancingscyphozoa, Those days are over. It used to be underground because there was just no place to do it, there were fewer fans and also part of the reason are authorities cracking down on the drugs so they had to hide.
Nowadays everyone is networked, a lot more fans of the music, it’s easier to know about parties, get drugs and meet people who host secret parties.(Not really so secret though) Because of that there’s just no lasting ‘underground scene’ anymore, if that makes sense.
Are you just set on EDM, if not what kind of music? Start out with a couple of friends, who knows what may come out of it. PLUR. :]
@ijesuschrist I want to go to this so bad! But I can’t afford it :/ I do plan on getting out to the infected mushroom thing though :)
@heavydreamz Yeah, I am not fond of crowds which is one thing, like I need my space to dance and another thing is I am not fond of clubs because they kind of center their attention (or at least the attendee’s attention) around alcohol and sex. But it does sound like the crowd that event draws will be quite different from the average club crowd, which does make me feel a lot easier about going. And checkin out the Facebook page now :)
@motorik I disagree that there aren’t any places to throw the undergrounds, My boyfriend and I are constantly wandering around just our town and finding tons of places that could potentially work, we just need to get some big speakers out there and blast music, stare at the stars for a night and see if anyone shows up to kick us out. That’s the other thing, when police do show up (I’ve been to a few renegades that got shut down) they just tell everyone to go home. If they police have had to kick people out multiple times in the same area then yeah they do get upset and ticket everyone (like Apex’s 2year) but if we’re smart about it none of the cops will get pushed to that point.
This makes sense though, I haven’t given much thought as to why the underground scene is getting smaller, but this would explain it.
I am a huge fan of EDM, more so of trance(especially psy-trance), lounge, house and the EDM that was produced in the 90s than what I hear now, especially on the radio. But I feel like every genre of music has its place (although rap about bitches an hoes and gettin dat monay or country about how you lost yo gal and dawg have no place with me). I would be really interested in going to (or even possibly throwing) an underground event that was anti-EDM just because its starting to get over produced and loosing it quality with the media. Also because I’ve never been to something like that. And so far I have one person whose with me on this. So I’ll see where things go :)
I’m over in Cardiff, UK, and I live and breathe for this shit :) Happy to report it’s alive and well in plenty of areas of the British Isles, particularly the south west. You just have to know where to look.
Massive love to anyone out there who ever helped put on a show without getting paid a penny. You are what makes my life.
@josephm I plan on getting out to Infected mushroom on the 20th, definitely hoping to meet the right people there. :) As for the burner parties and anything in Folsom, I’ll have to work on that, if you know any good starting points definitely let me know :)
@nickc2007 I am very glad to hear this! Keep the love alive! :D
@dancingscyphozoa, RIght? Fuck yeah the 90’s EDM is the best. Just take a look at all the event links that were posted here. People hear about them on way or another, but not enough to make it really big, I guess that’s what underground is now. What I see as underground is a local venue/bar that lets local artist play and everyone pretty much knows each other, although they have a tendency to close down when they get too much attention.I say go for it!
@nickc2007, Jealous, the U.K. surely makes the best EDM today.
I’m from the North Bay and I’ve been raving for the past 2 or 3 years. I hate to say it, but the scene is in fact declining. With the introduction of trap (which I strongly dislike AND tends to draw sketchy crowds) and the fact that several well-renowned crews have disbanded recently, there are few parties that still look exciting. I’ll be at Camp Marijuana, but other than that and a few other campouts and renegades this year is looking kinda dull. Parties just aren’t quite thrown like they used to be.
