Hey, I’m doing an art project for my portfolio and I’ve chosen the topic of freedom, I’d love to hear other people’s opinions to include as research or to develop further as starting points for some paintings. I’ve got a few ideas that I’ll list as starting points and particular aspects of the topic that I’d love to hear your view on :)
-what is freedom to you?
-is it possible to have complete freedom (thinking along the lines of media control, the government, governent lying, no freedom to experiment with drugs that expand our minds, money trapping us, brainwashing, 1984 by Orwell, consumerism, capitialism, societies expectations limiting freedom, etc.)
-people who campaiged for freedom but were stopped/assasinated like MLK and aswell as other counter cuture groups like 70’s punks and 60’s hippies
-mental freedom (freedom from our own thoughts and not letting them control us, freedom from self damaging behaviours, overocming things like fear that trap us)
-technology and freedom (governemnt using technology to spy on us, edward snowden, julian assange, comapnies keeping our personal information, will we ever be free from advertisements, snoopers charter that lets the government keep records of our web history, iphone location, etc)
– the eductaion system limiting freedom (creating obedientworkers trapped in the system rather than free thinking, sticking to a cirriculum)
– could a universal wage give citezens more freedom?
-how far should feedom be tolerated, where do you draw the line or set boudnaries???
I think true freedom to me is freedom of the mind. The mind is the most important thing in this world and basically mediates everything in your life. There is definitely a physical kind of freedom like some of your ideas with freedom of press and education and universal wages. But I think almost more importantly is how free you feel within your mind. If you are able to have a completely open mind without prejudices, negative ideas of others people or things you dont know or fully understand, stress, things like that then you live a much happier and free life. Freedom is being able to imagine anything in your mind without social, consumeristic, physical objects, political ideas influencing your thoughts. Freedom is surrendering to the mystery of life and the fact that we will never know why we exist or what the universe really is. It’s understanding that we are all very alike and our social and culutral differences dont matter in the big picture.
You said you are going to paint? Maybe somehow incorporate the brain or mind as an object without bounds or walls. Like a brain with colorful thoughts flowing from the inside to the outside and swirling around in a cloud of beauty and color. I dont know, just my .2 cents. Good luck :)
Thank you so much for your reply! I love your ideas and you’ve been a great help, it actually made my day reading that it was beautiful! I think now I’m going to use ‘freedom of the mind’ as the main focus of my topic. Also I love the line ‘freedom is surrendering to the mystery of life’- that was hugely insipring! I love to paint portraits so I think focusing on freedom as a very individual and intrinsic concept would work really well, love the idea for the painting, can’t wait to start sketching out ideas :) thanks again!!
