What (@lamppi) 8 years, 5 months ago

Next month im going to backpack trough europe alone.
Is there anyone else whos going or someone whos already done that and wants to share the experience?

Time is not limited.
I wanna see all kinds of places, big citys to not so visited.
My budget is low and im mostly hitchhiking and tenting.
If u know the subject then all kinds of advice is great, beacuse its my first time.
Also recomend me some great places in europe and some beautiful mountains to hike in swiz or around.
Cant wait to get on the road.
And love to see your answers.

Pack only what you think you will need, then take out another 10% of that weight from your pack. Buy food at local markets and grocery stores, not restaurants.

– Hitchhike from tankstation to tankstation. Tell people at the beginning of the ride that you really prefer to be dropped of at a tankstation instead of just somewhere where they leave the highway.
-Approach people at the tankstation, just friendly. Will feel a bit weird at first because you’ll think that people will approach you if they would like to take you in the car. But I experienced that that is not true at all. Traveled in Europe last summer. Allot of people are a bit scared to start the conversation ( if you ‘re standing at the tankstation with your thump up or a sign or something) because that is just not what their comfort zone pushes them to do. Understand that is is okay to start the conversation yourself. Just approach and ask friendly where they are going. They’ll feel that you are a good person in a second and that will open up the conversation and possible rides!! It is like breaking ice you understand, it really a good thing to do.

grindenwald in switzerland is a village in the alps with plenty of amazing hiking routes around, has everything really mountains, forest, fields of flowers, rivers/streams, ponds..just wow, felt like entering a fairytale..definitely one of the most striking places ive been. beware switzerland is extremely expensive though id recommend bringing some supplies from the previous country. maybe knowing a few budget hostel names/addresses in each city with kitchens in advance, in my experience most places didnt have kitchens and it saves so much on food money. have an amazing adventure!!

I’m going to do the same thing. A friend of my and myself chose to go to Schotland, we will take a boat towards Harwich in England and travel with a so called “interrail” ticket to the north of Schotland and back. (No promotion just an option, you may want to check it out.)

We will camp mostly in nature and we will visit places like Glascow and Edinburgh as well. For the rest of the trip we travel unplanned, it may cause wonderful experiences. good luck mate !

Wow that sounds amazing, I would love to join but I’m kinda held down with 0 income at the moment. Switzerland is somewhere Ive always wanted to go to, it’s just too nice of a place to pass up.

I’m sure you’ll meet an amazing amount of wonderful people like yourself out there and it’ll be the time of your life. Keep us updated! Post pictures! Track your journey with everything you’ve got. :)

Safe travels friend, cheers

Thank you all for your answers.

Not planning to go to restaurants, cus of my low budget.
Im using trangia mess kit for most of my hot meals.

I think at first it will be wierd to approach people and ask for lift, but we,ll get used to everything.
Its rather scary than wierd. Good idea, will use this.
Do you know anything about truck stops ?
How should i behave there. Maybe ask for some truck driver to use hes radio transmitter to let other truckdrivers now that im looking for ride .. ?

Great info.
Like to spend some good time in mountains.
Planning to go trough swiz, to italy or east coast of adriatic sea.

I wish you all the best.
You definitely wont regret.

I wish you all the best and i think if you really want it then you should go for it , if the opportunity comes for you finance state. You dont need big numbers for that.
