BACKSTORY: I’ve never been too much interested in going lucid in my dreams, however, just a few years ago, I started having very intensive, very realistic, multi-layered dreams (meaning I’ve had tons of fake awakenings). I remember, the first one which lasted for days in subjective time was interestingly a few days before watching Inception. :P In real life, it’s nothing like Inception, you know. Anyway, occasionally I had these periods, typically more in winter, so I decided to study them and figure them out. I’ve been analyzing dream symbols with interesting results. I got into this study deeper this spring and I’ve started writing my dreams down on a daily basis. A few cases are recorded with very interesting outcomes, such as possible precognition or telepathy. I’ve got so excited on these occasions, I’m gonna definitely continue this experiment and you’ll hear from me more. However, what I’m gonna talk about is happened today, similarly to what happened to me a few days ago.
WHAT HAPPENED TODAY: You see, I’ve had this multi-layered hyper realistic dream which one point became lucid, but even then I had problems with controlling the world as I just couldn’t believe I could, it seemed that real. I had multiple fake awakenings, it sure was a wild ride. It seems to me now that I have found the formula to induce these incredible movies! To be more precise, it hit me a few days ago when I had a similar experience. I’m not sure about this yet, so I’m gonna do more experiments and you should, too!
SO, WHAT ARE THE CONDITIONS I HAVE BEEN IN having these dreams? Here I list the ones I found relevant:
#1 Eating bananas. I typically eat more bananas during the winter, it’s more common here. This morning I ate only one before writing my school test 8 o’clock. A few days ago after my dream it became so clear to me that this had an effect on me, I looked it up. There are studies showing similar results out there! They say it’s Vitamin B6 that causes it, but you would have to eat a lot of bananas to get the same amount. However, it worked for me with just one or two, wonder why. Maybe it combines with the other conditions.
#2 Eidam cheese. I’ve read that some kind of cheese can induce weird dreams, and it depends on what kind of cheese you eat. Where I live, you can’t get so many kind of cheese cheap, but I’ve done some experiments anyway. It didn’t work. However, yesterday, and a few days before I had a bigger amount of eidam (or edam?) cheese.
#3 Eggs I’m not sure if this counts or not, after writing my test this morning, I returned to the dorm and had a breakfast of 3 boiled eggs. Again, this may be irrelevant. Protip: if you want to boil eggs perfectly (not too dry, not too sluppy), you boil them for 3 minutes on full force without lid on, than you take them down and let them in the heated water with lid on for 7 minutes. Also, you put salt in the water. Yummy!
#4 This one may be the most important. Chances are you’ve heard about this: you have to flip your brain chemistry by changing your sleeping habits fast. It works better if you go to sleep when your brain thinks it should be awake, which is naturally in the morning or in bright lighting (your brain starts to pump serotonin into your blood and melatonin starts to break down, which will result in you being more awake). I’ve only slept about 3 or 4 hours at night, but after the test (it was a piece of cake) I’ve come back and went to sleep around 9 or 9:30. It worked out perfectly this time.
So, this is it. Can you add something else to this recipe?
I also want to add that no matter how cool this may be, I still think it’s not healthy in the long run. Not the dreaming, but the fact that my brain’s so called ‘left hemisphere’ functioning is in overdrive, which, in my opinion is the cause for being lucid. I sure can read stuff in these dreams, and talk with others and to myself. I’ve noticed the past few months my thoughts become blurrier as the weather became darker. I now have problems with meditating and stopping my thoughts. Got any data on that? Please share with me anything you’ve got.
P.S.: I’ve tried calea zachatechichi two times, didn’t work for me yet.
@filipek, It was discussed A LOT on psychonaut.com that fatty foods induced heavily vivid and lucid dreams (i.e. after big pot-lucks and thanksgiving and get togethers)…
But also I seem to be under the impression that if you google “(insert food item her) induces lucid dreams” will nearly always bring up someone claiming it as true.
@ijesuschrist, @roll, There may be correlations, but since we do not even know what the purposes of dreaming is (purely speculation as far as my most up to date knowledge is, but if any of you have some interesting articles with new insights, please feel free to share since I am interested in this subject), nor do we know where it comes from and which parts of the brain actually causes us to dream, or which parts make us remember our dreams or which parts cause us to lucid dream, how can we possible make connections with certain foods that could have an effect on this? Yes we know which parts are active during our dreaming states, but that is all as far as I know. Most probably it is a combination of certain aspects, and from my own experience I can tell that the more I focus on remembering my dreams before I go to sleep, the more often I remember my dreams and the more detailed I remember them. When I start writing them down the moment I wake up, the dreams become more vivid in the following days as well, no matter my diet.
I actually think that you have a valid point with your diet. However, it might not have that much of an influence, it sure has some effect, just like you said.
Nowadays I can’t just get away with that without proving my point with the help of (drumroll) proof. But I’m gonna do it even bigger: It’s been posted on this same blog.

You don’t need to fully understand dreaming in order to find correlations between events in waking life (including foods you eat) and the quality/vividness of dreams, etc.
Heck, you directly contradict your first point a few sentences later when you go on to say keeping a dream journal causes you to have more vivid dreams… but how can you come to that conclusion w/out fully understanding what is happening when we dream!
The “evidence” is heavily anecdotal and subjective, but through trial and error you can figure it out for your individual self. To think that our diet wouldn’t have an effect on our quality of dreams is insane though (what that effect is may be heavily dependant on the individual, but it is there nonetheless)… our diet effects everything about us :)
@filipek, Yeah, my dream journal helps me remember my dream every day. But vividness and clear recall is not the same, I think. Sometimes there’s a world between dreams, in emotional intensity, coherence, vividness etc. Actually, I can recall Less from what happened in these lucid periods, which event came after which, nor can I ‘bring back’ all the details I know it had when I was there.
Stay present in waking reality and you will have lucid dreams. Lucid dreaming is just the ability to stay conscious while sleeping. Just like in waking reality you can get so absorbed in your mental states and feelings that you take your perceptions to be absolute(i.e. being unconscious), the normal dream state is one where your consciousness is completely absorbed in the dream reality, so you don’t know you are dreaming.
Control while awake = control while dreaming.
Of course diet has an impact on your dreams. All that you eat alters your body’s chemistry one way or another, to varying degrees. This shapes your dreams.
As for going lucid, it’s simple, just become more conscious. Present, aware, whatever you wanna call it.
The more alert you are when you’re awake, the more alert you are when you sleep.
No need for techniques and methods.
I think that anything can help you trigger these dreams you get! because as we know everything we dream is somewhere stored up in most amazing organ in our body! Our brain. So maybe by eating these bananas you tell your body that it wants to have certain dreams. If you think about it our brains are insanely smart, isn’t something were we only use like 30 percent of our full capacity of thinking? so really if we can only control 30 percent of it does the other 70 percent have its mind of its own. think of it like all your other 5 senses. when you smell a familiar sent it takes you back to an old forgotten memory. all the sudden this memory is so vivid that you smile and think how could i forget that! what if dreaming has the same effect where. once that banana actually reaches your stomach your body reminds your “mind” on it and then all these memories are accessed and from there you make up your dreams
@ijesuschrist, i would be careful with the fatty food intake before bed. I can attest to having some pretty horrific nightmares from eating a single cookie within 45 min of falling asleep. Some of these nightmares have scarred me for life.
@mikeyw829, So…. if in real life you are fully conscious would you be able to do anything?
I’m not sure where this idea is going but if your in a dream but not lucid then things are just happening…and when your in a lucid dream you can control the dream because your conscious of it would you be able to control real life if you are completely conscious?
Is that why in dreams you feel more deeply…persay, because you are fully conscious of the “now” in your dream.
@sarad, Not really sure. I mean there are monks and lay people alike who claim they can do things like walk through walls and levitate. I’ve never experienced any of that besides in dreams but i can definitely say that the more aware I become the more control I feel that I have in manipulating my environment through intention. I definitely see how my thoughts are connected to and influence reality. In dreams there are no physical laws to get in the way so you can do whatever you want
And yeah you’re probably right about why you feel more deeply in dreams. I notice when I have lucid dreams I am actually much more aware than in waking reality for the most part
Good to think about, I actually feel like I have weirder dreams, and remember them when I eat later in the evening.. Or that could be a coincidence but I think Ill try to eat a couple bananas before bed tonight and see what that does. Maybe just thinking about it will work kinda like a placebo.
I find that keeping a dream journal as well as taking a B supplement and 5-HTP supplement before bed helps me to have vivid dreams. As far as becoming lucid, that can be tricky. If you do something habitually in your waking life, you may start to do it in your dreams. You can’t see your hands normally in dreams, as well as read text/numbers, or adjust light levels. If you start checking digital clocks, looking at your hands, opening books, and flipping light switches in your real life, you may find that you begin to do this in your dreams. If you notice you can’t read a clock or a book, your hands are blurry, or you can’t turn off the lights… good chance you’re dreaming =D Once you realize it you are free assuming you don’t wake up or snap back into the dream.
