Can’t Sleep

DaJetPlane (@lytning91) 9 years, 8 months ago

Ugh, so this is basically what has happened: I have been staying up until about 2-3 in the morning, then trying to go to bed and not actually falling asleep until 4-5 in the morning. Yesterday, I stayed awake overnight so that I could try and reset my sleep cycle, making it so that I could get back to going to bed around 10-11. I took several naps throughout the day, so I am basically wondering if that’s why I only was in bed for like 2 hours and then kind of have just had crap on my mind.

In short, if you take naps while trying to reset your sleep cycle, will it interfere with your attempt? I basically lied away for an hour with these very abstract and poorly formed thoughts, trying to basically channel my energy into sleep through visualization.

yes, napping during the day will cause you to sleep less.

might try taking a melatonin supplement first couple nights to reset your circadian rhythms.

Don’t do anything mental, just try to be in your body, and try to relax it. Get a body scan meditation and do it each day over the course of a couple of weeks untill you do it naturally. Since i’;ve been doing this I haven’t had trouble sleeping once (it’s been 2 years, before I had plenty of trouble). I recommened Jon Kabat Zinn’s one.

also try not to stress out too much about having a “system” for going to bed. You don’t want to have to rely on a system because then if it gets fucked up for some reason you might freak out.

also, along with meditation, some light stretching is good for relaxing the body

@lytning91,
1. Go to Cracked.com
2. In the search bar, type “brain awesome.”
3. Find the article titled “5 Ways To Hack Your Brain Into Awesomeness.”
4. Check out #5.
5. Win.

Thanks guys. Hopefully I won’t have as much of a problem with it as I have been now that I have made it through the night. I will be busy all day, no doubt and so I expect to be tired at the right time of night for once.

@donjaime23, I’m a frequent flier on Cracked and have read that article before. Mine was just more of a fact check than an “I can never sleep ever” thing.

@donjaime23, also you should read this instead of cracked: https://www.highexistence.com/alternate-sleep-cycles/

@rickvonstar, I agree.

OP, don’t make it into a thing man. Once you have in your mind “I can’t sleep. I have to do this in order to sleep” you’re enabling your not sleeping. Just try and relax as much as possible. For me, a lot of excercise in the day makes me sleep like a baby. I go to bed completely ready to sleep.

@ojai, I honestly do not think it’s that serious either. I have had nothing going on for like the past 3 whole weeks, waiting for these people who said I would be hired at the beginning of the month to actually hire me. I think it had a lot to do with the stress of not having the job and the imbalance of getting to spend all of my time just staying up doing nothing productive.

I FINALLY got hired and start work tomorrow and am probably gonna sleep like a baby again. =)

I completely understand. There’s a song I like and part of it goes “I’ve got some friends who hate their fucking lives. I guess that’s what inactivity does to the mind.”

Which is true.

@ojai, It is indeed. There’s a difference between refusing to become a cog in the machine that is our workforce, but it’s another thing to use that as an excuse for doing absolutely nothing with your time
