Close-Mindedness

Eric (@eric0127) 8 years, 9 months ago

I tried to have a discussion/conversation with my friend yesterday about happiness/education in general and it seemed like no matter what I said about learning about other cultures and ways of life, his reply was “its just my opinion and he learns enough in school.”

I tried having similar conversations with other friends and I have gotten the same responses; that it is my opinion or something of the like such as me having a screw loose.

This got me thinking, is it still possible to have an intellectual conversation anymore with people without having them be stuck in their close minded way of thinking?

@eric0127, a lot of times I find myself in these situations. If someone is not open to what you have to say arguing will push them further from seeing your point of view. Sometimes I wish I could keep my mouth shut. There is something to silence.

@eric0127, I’ve always thought of myself as open minded, but I’m starting to realize the line isn’t that clear. I am open to new ideas, but you have to be closed minded to lies. So naturally we put up defences (mine being the scientific method). If someone is close minded to your idea, try thinking from there perspective maybe you need to reconsider if your telling them the truth. Although it sounds like your friends are being a little irrational.

As to your argument, I’m confused the way worded it. Is the “he” in quotations referring to the same same he that said it and should be saying I? And the way you group happiness/education is confusing. If I’m interpreting right your telling your friends that being educated on other cultures helps to promote their happiness? In that case you are telling your friends how to make themselves happy?

@heavydreamz, It wasnt even an argument. It was about me wanting to be a student of the world and the importance of learning about all different ways of thinking. He said that its all my opinion and that he doesnt have or want to because no one else does. I tried to show the flaws in following the status quo and he again said its just my opinion and stopped replying.

Its a shame really that people dont want to gain knowledge

I dont understand close-minded people, therre are billions of ideas and things you can learn daily if you keep your mind open to everything

@tlrlittle, Nah, just different topics we were discussion, not the interconnectedness of happiness and education.

Yea, I worded it poorly. I briefly mentioned and explained the importance of learning about the world and the idea of interconnectedness between all beings. His reply to me was, “thats just your opinion…I dont need to learn about it because no one else is.”

So I tried to explain my point so he could see my way of thinking and instead of giving his thinking, he (my friend) gave a vague reason.

@nikkihinckley, Exactly, I dont understand why people limit themselves to one thing to learn in college. Even if a certain idea isnt of interest, I think it’s still important to at least know about it and see the logic or thinking behind the idea

@eric0127, Ok makes more sense. I have a friend who is always throwing radical ideas about metaphysics at me and other people constantly, and he says the same thing, is it possible to have an “intellectual conversation”. While I am usually interested in what he is saying and try to make conversation about it, generally bouncing it off science and pointing out the flaws and points that make sense, most people just look at him like he’s crazy and say nothing. Although there are many times when I feel like he’s prying to get a response out of me when I have none(he’s very extravert, I’m very introvert). I think the issue is you are trying to have a discussion about an idea that your friends aren’t interested in and don’t have responses for, try not to pry ideas out of them though as that can get annoying. Whether that means you can’t have intellectual conversations with them, well that just depends on your concept of intellectual, maybe you just need to find something they are interested in discussing, something a little less radical probably. It’s good to discuss new ideas, but just because the idea of God isn’t impossible, doesn’t mean we should talk about him as if he exists. But that’s just my opinion :P

Yeah i’ve been in situations where you can actually feel the wall they put up. Sad thing about becoming open-minded/awakened, they have to do it on their own. They have to be willing to LISTEN and learn something new. It’s fucked up though the way people are manipulated into thinking that they are sane when we have clearly lost our true nature. Little by little though the generation is getting stronger, more & more people are becoming conscious i believe.

I read this from the book Awareness by Anthony De Mello.. he wrote,” One sign that you know you are awakened is when you ask yourself, ” Am I crazy or are they crazy”.” I think Albert Einstein quoted that quote.

I’ve been through many situations like that though I end up feeling like the weird/crazy one. haha but it’s all good, I just follow my heart n shit. @eric0127,

@eric0127, I completely agree with everything you are saying. It is crazy to think about. I ask myself how can one be so closed-minded? When I try to make sense of this, the only thing I can conclude is that they must just think in a different way, but who am I too judge that that is the wrong way to think? How does one decide what the right way to think is? In their head, they are right. I do try to see it from their perspective, but I can not help but feel sorry for them. They are missing out on the deeper interconnectedness of life and understanding of the world around them. They will never know how lucky they are to be human.

@lextdc14, I have no problem with people having different ideas, to me its what makes life so interesting. But when I ask people why they think a certain way and their response is, well thats the best thing out there or that the idea is based of their religion, I am always a little concerned.

Don’t mean to bother, but wouldn’t it be closed? I’m just asking.

@eric0127, No. As soon as someone tells you “it’s just your opinion”, means they have no solid opinion at all. It’s like what you want more – to question or to have all the answers. To question is at least possible.

@beyond, I believe it’s all opinion. For example, “Mozart is shit”. For someone else, Mozart may be “The shit”. It’s all relative to the monkey listening to the music.

Forgive me if I don’t make sense, I haven’t slept in 3 days.

@lextdc14, What comes from being “right?”

That is the question we need to be asking ourselves.

@ballsackturtles23, Yep. Even calling someone closed-minded is closed-minded just by putting someone else in one category from one conversation at a specific time.

Tradition has a purpose. Tradition also extends to certain thoughts, some families don’t believe in harboring concepts that are unfamiliar, this is a way of defending themselves against losing structure.

It’s rather pointless to beg someone into your views if they simply don’t get it or aren’t willing enough to try.

Eric (59) (@eric0127) 8 years, 9 months ago ago

@cognizantelephant, I wasn’t trying to get them to think the same way as me though. I just wanted to converse to see what his thoughts were and why he thought that way bc I was interested.

@beyond, this is actually one of my good-friends that I talk to a lot so I’m basing it off of many encounters. This is just the one that made me fully realize it

@eric0127, Can you think of a synonym of being closed-minded? I just don’t put that term in my dictionary.

Earth is full of closed-minded idiots. Fortunately, that’s why we have High Existence… (:
