Cool Jobs

I am planning to take a year off after I graduate from U of O (go ducks by the way), and I would like to go abroad and live very simply for a year or two. I plan to work various jobs, and have heard of some cool opportunities that people have found for work. I just want to see what people have to say about non-career jobs that they enjoyed. For example, I thought it was pretty cool that people can be a “house sitter” for various amounts of time by connecting to a website. Another was a guy in hawaii who used to give tours up in the various volcanoes in a hummer What experiences have y’all had with part time jobs that are cool?

@gilberth13, Personally I’ve worked in tourist shops in national parks doing seasonal work, like serving food or working in a gift shop. I haven’t done this, but this is becoming more popular, gap year traveling:

It’s pretty good and set up on here – you can volunteer work for places to sleep, or work lower paying jobs. Good way to just get there :) peace and love!

@gilberth13, great, glad to help! If you’re looking to stay in the country, I worked for a company called Xanterra Resorts, which is a corp that owns all the tourist stops in the national parks, they’re pretty quick to hire.

Hey,
I just was looking through my past (and very few) posts and saw this conversation that happened almost 2 years ago. I have had gapyear.com as a bookmark on my browser since this talk, and I just now remember this is where it came from! I don’t think I will end up using the site a ton for actual booking, as my plans have materialized in other ways. I am moving to Thailand in August to teach english, or might just stop at some Woofing jobs on the way there from Europe. But info I have found from your reference has definitely helped in the planning process. So thanks again!
