Enivornments … Just How Important Are They?

Reecey (@ReeceyBaby)6 years, 10 months ago

I’ve been on HE for a while…
Studying self improvement and seeking wisdom much longer.

Now it’s obviously well documented that environments can have a great
impact on how we feel and behave. I’m currently reading “Making and
Breaking Habits”… which emphasizes this point heavily.

I’ve been living in many different kinds of social dynamics and housing
situations since I was 16 and my mum kicked me out and I’m grateful
for all the weird environments I’ve been influenced by. Shortly I’ll be
heading to Thailand to train martial arts and be closer to nature
for 6 months… a calling for a new environment I guess.

I’m just wondering from other people’s personal experiences,
how heavily do you think your environment effects you and
what are the tangible results?

Can you negate them with will, or is a certain amount of influence
from your environment inevitable regardless of your intention?

I guess it depends on how much you give from yourself to the environment, including importance. I forget a lot so I don’t know. I should start sleeping more like normal people. I feel like a bat. I won’t remember this.

Or not? Seriously, I don’t know. I’ve spent the last few months in one room composing music and the only social contacts I have involve discussing it. What’s like… in the real world?

Greener grass, sunshine, rainbows, and puppies.

No wonder there are so many peace movements. People don’t leave each other alone.

What music are you composing? Link pls? :D

I don’t upload everything but whatever I decide. For example this morning I made a trip hop bassline to listen to while I sleep. I realized I don’t need drums after a whole night of being creative with drums on it. Well, this is an improvised melody for a link. https://soundcloud.com/beyond-impulse/unostentatious
The clock and the title symbolize the listener’s time is more important than the tune. :D

Hey, if you make music I’d like to hear too.

Heh, well I mostly write contemporary classical… (the kind that makes most people go ”ewww” :P though I don’t find my own to be that kind of really-difficult-to-digest)
Here’s a more ‘normal’ tune (it’s only weird at the beginning, I promise :)) ), just atmospheric and wandering aimlessly… (electronic btw) https://soundcloud.com/irina-v/iarn-winter
:)

Cool tune, by the way :)

I enjoy the weirdness. This has a therapeutic effect on me. Oh, I just realized the wind is from your composition, not from outside! Alright. Haha! Well, we’d probably hear each other’s music again. I know I would because I stalk you on sound cloud now.

Yeey, I have a stalker :D huehue. Well, I’m glad you have such an openminded approach to weirdness :) are you familiar with XXth century (‘contemporary classical’) music? actually, I think imma start a thread on that or something

I think our environment naturally reflects our mindset. That is, it is a mirror image of who we are.

I think we are, in whole, influenced by both our environment and our genome. Its the whole nature vs nurture debate. Some believe that it is either one (nature) or the other (nurture), while I believe they both play a strong role in influencing who we are as a person.

As far understanding which one (nature vs nurture) is more influential… I think it depends on the person. If someone was raised in an extreme environment then their environment will probably “trump” their genome as being more influential. On the other hand, if someone’s genome contains a rare or out of the ordinary DNA sequence than that sequence will probably be expressed no matter what environment they are living in.

You’re inseparable from your environment. To identify yourself as separate is a flaw of man. You are the web of interactions and connections that take place. All people and things are part of who you are and who you are to become.

I live in Denmark, and I gets very cold in winter times. I can feel that on my energy and therefore my emotions. when spring arrives I get happier because of the suns impact on my energy. So yeah environment does make a change in how you act and who you are.

Also living in Denmark I can second that, Winter-depression is a common theme here.. But I think it’s like BeyondEarth said, it depends on how you look at the surroundings and how they affect you, stronger experiences will leave stronger impressions..

I personally don’t feel heavily influenced by my environment most of the time, but I think it’s because it’s effects are small and accumulative. It’s only usually when I feel a strong enough emotion of agitation or frustration I start realising the little things in the environment bugging me.

How about everyone’s opinion on their idea of a “perfect environment?
(or as close to perfection as possible)
