Existential Crisis: How do You Find Confidence in Your Life?

Samuel (@iamdrugs)5 years, 10 months ago

About a year ago, I was getting heavily involved in New Age spirituality, the kind which is promoted here on High Existence. I decided that I wanted to truly experience higher levels of consciousness, so I tried to Lucid Dream. I can no longer remember whether or not I succeeded. However, every single day, every single second, from that night on, has felt like a dream.
The world feels and looks fuzzy, nothing is concrete anymore. I see absolutely no reason why the universe or existence should exist, and it makes no sense that anything is actually happening. Spirituality, philosophy, meditation, nothing has any meaning anymore for me. I can’t tell if it’s me or the world, but I literally do not believe that anything exists.
Now, I don’t want you pretentious New Age shitheads giving me stupid, naive responses like “You’re right, nothing exists, it’s all what you create” or anything of the sort. I just wanna know, how do you know that the universe exists? How do any of you have confidence that this, whatever you believe, is true? How do you find security and confidence in your life?
I really want to know your personal reasons, not some generic response.

Brain in vat. It’s kind of your fault that you bought into “Do this and live a higher state of consciousness, guaranteed or your money back.” Maybe you are the New Age shithead. Learn and move on.

Whenever I start feeling like this, I remember what it was before I heard of it. Calling it existential crisis, identity crisis, depersonalization, mid-age crisis or anything with the same definition is only going to confirm a depressed person’s mess. I don’t get depressed – I get selfish. Everything I’ve forgotten is underneath what I’ve been piling. Underneath is simplicity. Time to clean up.

That’s an important and Sacred key you hold in your hand.
To mention the word sacred already makes us paint a Religious picture, and it may actually not be : )
At the same time, it may also be absolutely religious.

Stop doing drugs and work. That’s your solution. Greetings

I had the same exact problem bro. For me, the problem was weed. I am currently trying to stop smoking, I got a job, a girlfriend. And I cut all the shit out of my head. Be real for a while. Once you have come back, you would be making wiser choices and you’ll feel plenty. But DO NOT do drugs. Blessings

By the way if you want to realize if something exists then jump from a 1st floor and break your legs.

Stupid. there’s even a medical term for this. Killing yourself and survive, just makes you grateful to be alive. Emancipation from the depression and stress of your Life&death situation. There’s no meaning to begin with to even make a philosophy.

Come back down to Earth, buddy. Ground yourself. There is work do be done in the here and now. Immerse yourself in the moment.

That’s the only thing that ever works for me, so I am telling you this from my heart to yours. And as a reminder to myself!

I’ve lived my life one existential crisis to another for far too long. Its fun and scary and enlightening and anything and everything in between to be a cosmic traveler, but when you come back you see your bed was just as warm as you left it and your dinner is still hot.

I have no confidence the universe exists. I have no confidence that anything I believe is true. I just take what I am given moment to moment as a blessing and go from there.

Walks in nature, swimming in lakes/the ocean, playing in the snow, dancing in the rain…connect with the Earth. She is our anchor in this realm.

Good luck, friend.

If i sit in my room with no life forms around then I feel that way(how youre feeling). But I once meditated in my garden. and after a long silence. I can feel the life around me creeping into me, Especially plant life, even the ray of sunshine is filled with energy. After i open my eyes and still feeling that way, it’s like the plants are communicating and smiling at me. I lay flat on the grass, i can feel a sensation rising up from the ground, and looking straight up the sky isnt very far away, and after awhile as my vision is slowly expanding , I can even see the curvature or the sky/ozonelayer. This becomes more intense with Kundalini energy.

The way i feel is if you’re alone, nothing and only you exist. If you’re one with the universe, everything becomes a part of you or maybe just the natural forms. Understand the roots and effects of your existence, how you effect the enviroment and vice versa. A naturalist understands that everything natural on earth has all the rights to belong in this vast land and sea. Consider HOW you exist rather than WHY, and you find your security and BELONGING wherever you are. The more you understand this, the greater confidence arises.

Remember, everything logical in your mind may seem to be a convincing truth (that may even be the cause to emotions, beliefs and aura). Knowledge is a key to the door, but experience means walking through it, maybe it’s the truth maybe its not, but its definitely the reality of your existence together with the universe.

What you crave is Spiritual Enlightenment. If you’re a fully awakened soul then maybe you can ignore this but I really hope you accept what im about to elaborate. The raw knowledge is all within you. Within this deep connection which centres the universe around you is this all knowing knowledge/truth, nobody can explain this feeling, but they call it Kundalini. I suggest you learn about it, because for our level, Buddha definitely has all the answers.
I’m only 3 years into this. my consciousness and means to existence evolve weekly and sometimes daily.

Full Enlightenment takes years, almost a lifetime. Be patient and eliminate fear. Be curious (courage). Be calm and mindful, then meaning and the truth will arrive.

This is what I believe, from my own experience.

Well, it seems that you are getting involved with a philosophy called Nihilism, which is a philosophy which states that all values (ethical nihilism) and existence (metaphysical nihilism) are worthless (without value and meaning).
I went through a phase such as this just a few months ago. In addition, I was unable to find really any logical fallacies with the argument of nihilism as well, so (since I am a person grounded by logic and reason) I couldn’t deny or simply forget about it.
I recommend if you do feel suicidal that you take a gander at Camus’ Myth of Sisyphus. It goes about introducing the philosophy of absurdism, “philosophical school of thought stating that the efforts of humanity to find inherent meaning will ultimately fail (and hence are absurd) because the sheer amount of information as well as the vast realm of the unknown make certainty impossible,”. After doing so, Camus presents the 3 reactions to this. Suicide (killing self), Philosophical Suicide (joining a religion, etc.), and lastly Acceptance of the Absurd (embrace the absurdity of the universe and live despite the triviality. Rebelling against death).
Moving on. If the universe is devoid of any intrinsic value then we can say that everything can have extrinsic value. What this means is that everything can be valued and there is no restrictions on what can be valued. Also, same ting with meaning. With the absence of intrinsic meaning it means that everything can have an extrinsic meaning. This is especially important for individualism because it allows us to create our own meaning… and this define ourselves as individuals.
This philosophy is called existentialism. “Existence precedes essence,” Sartre (existentialist philosopher) said.
Nietzsche really puts this in a very interesting view. Due to the fact that no intrinsic value/meaning exists, we are completely and utterly free to do whatever we want. We are the child which plays with life, doing acts without needing justification. I heavily suggest reading more on Nietzsche.
Lastly, for your questions on have one can prove the existence of the universe and all that stuff, you cannot really prove nor disprove it. Alike to a belief in God (or any religion) why does it matter whether or not it is true? If the universe actually exists, then if you live a fun life you will be glad you lived it. If it does not exist, you would have still felt as if you lived a fun life from your perspective.
So, to conclude, in a way “New Age shitheads” are correct for value and meaning. Due to the absence of intrinsic value and meaning, we are given the freedom to do whatever we want and to create our own values and meanings.

The name of the medicine is Alan Watts…Im no guru-lover or whatever and Mr Watts wasnt no damn guru either…my assuming is ridiciolous, I know. But seriously, he’s metaphysics and ways of interpretating the “existence” are really gonna broaden your perspective and give u some peace of mind.

I don’t have any of this sort of security and confidence. I doubt I will achieve it. And I doubt whether I even want it.

We have to lift the veil to see for ourselves. A ‘Receiving’ if you WILL. When you see it you will know rather than believe in a pre-conceived idea and thought. I hope that don’t sound New-Agey.

LVX (297) (@Vovinawol) 5 years, 10 months ago ago

It’s like a group of people sitting in front of a curtain and all taking a guess as to what is behind it and each thinking that they’re guess is truth.
Then one of these persons sneeks over and lifts up this curtain. The others don’t see this person do this nor see what is behind it.
The one who saw behind this veil can’t see what was there for any of the others.
He may write many words of description about what he saw, but the words mean nothing to the un-initiated.

@iamdrugs I mean when it comes down to it, what choice do we have? You exist, thats the end of it. So if you don’t think that anything really exists, why go on with anything? I’m guessing you eat, have a job, sleep at night, and do all of these things in order to keep on with your existence. Why do these things though if nothing exists?

@lamdrugs
I can’t say for a certainty that anything exists except myself (see st. augustine: the problem of other minds). however i still find meaning in the company of friends. this is true whether i’m awake or dreaming. experiences like laughter and good times have meaning and offer validity to existing because i value them. the creative process is another reason to exist, as thoughts actions and matter combine and transcend to initiate an event.
that being said, i gotta say it sounds like you need to chill the fuck out. smell the roses, eat chocolate, bullshit with your neighbor and for xts sake keep at least one foot firmly planted on the ground.
