Ganzfeld Effect

When you place yourself in a “Ganzfeld situation” so you only see one constant blur of colour and a constant sound, what actually happens? I’ve always thought of it as:
Your brain shuts down the connections to your eyes and ears, then you can “see” clear visions as if it’s eye sight.
When I did a bit of research recently I found that there were more sites saying:
1. You see nothing, everything goes black and everything goes silent.
2. You hallucinate.
What actually happens? Whatever the answer it sounds really cool so I want to try it hahah.
