Getting out the school- Am I crazy enough ?

Douglas (@dougmda) 8 years, 8 months ago

So I am became really tired learning in school what I won’t use in the real life. I discovered to follow my bliss that is express myself through videos. I really appreciate movies and everything that involves video.
Now I’m at school but everyday I losing gradually losing the interest and I don’t want to go to college. School kills the curiosity and the interest for everything.
I want to make diferent types of videos: short movies, videos to people get excited about the life, any unseen kind of shit.
If necessary I will get any job, but if it would be possible I wanted to have at least 8 hours per day to practice everythng that is related with videos.
And the videos that I want to do is for youtube, so I depending on youtube to get money to continue to do what I love.
I am going against my parents and everyone.
Am I crazy enough ?

Do WHATEVER you want. Just remember that we haven’t advanced beyond money yet. Money is still important for survival (unless you want to become a subsistence farmer) and we still have to make it. Make sure you have a back-up plan. Or 4. But never forget to follow your dreams and never put anything off!

How about you stay in school until you have enough money coming in from your videos to sustain yourself?

You can’t make videos in your free time now?

@ijesuschrist, Yes I can make videos on my free time. But I wanted to have more time. Well, I guess the best thing to do is something to sustain myself, while I do my videos. I was counting on my parents to sustain me but I dont know when or if I will earn money from this.

I’m at a very similar place with this, I’m trying to finish a degree while making music videos and visuals. It’s just about balance, you’ve got to juggle school and your passion until you’ve got your qualifications because unfortunately that’s still how the world works. You can manage it though, I’m doing visuals at Outlook Festival in Croatia this summer once I’ve graduated. And next year I plan on working a bar job to pay the bills while I work on being able to make the videos and music a career that I can live off.

@dougmda, idk man, do what you feel is right of course, and there’s always a way to get what you want (more time for your videos, etc). But I like what @ijesuschrist, said here: stay in school while you keep improving at your videos. You say you’d be ok with doing any job now, but I guarantee that once you start working for low wages, you will start being pissed off 24/7. I know it’s tough to find a subject in school interesting but is there any major or course that interests you?

@dougmda, Just start making videos man… you have plenty of free time.

If you have 4 hours of free time now, and you aren’t going to use them to make videos, why do you think having 12 hours of free time is going to suddenly change that.

Start making videos, see if you’re going to make anything from it, and if you are AND you need more time, then yeah, consider putting college to the side.

To me it sounds like you just want to be a lazy piece of shit and not do any work. I wouldn’t support my kids dropping out of college for this, if they didn’t show me they were serious first and that there was the possibility of them actually making something out of it.

The “right” thing to do is to finish your studies at college, doing videos during your free time until you get your degree.

I was in the same situation as you but i was and i am crazy so i quit school last year and now, i’m working as a freelancer and manage three online shops! Things start to grow, i’m happy, i will see if all this works well in the future and if not, i will work at a part-time job!

If you are sure your passion is about videos, i think you can succeed with efforts and patience and a lot of action (and organization ^^).

@dougmda, Here, read this zen-pencils featuring a Charles Bukowski quote. It’s important to follow your bliss, but you can’t expect to make money off of it right away, so it’s nice to have a back-up plan. Even if school doesn’t appeal to you, it will be easier to get a job in case things don’t work out the way you want them to.

@theskafish, I’m studying to enter in a administration course in a college. For the backup plan.

@ijesuschrist, Yeah, I’m lazy, but I’ll use all my free time for this, first to see if this is really gonna get somewhere. Thanks for the truths.

@rainclouder, I already saw this, but this is perfect for the moment. Thanks.

I’ll help you with your videos bro. I just read the Multi Orgasmic Man, get a hottie involved and we’ll sell thousands of videos.

@rainclouder, I love that Bukowski zen pencils thing. I probably should be more mindful of it, myself.

@dougmda, just don’t let the job break your will, that’s what happened to me. Remember your true desires, to create, not to drink beer, not to eat junk food with friends and talk about nothing (except maybe with the friends who are also involved with your project), you have to make time for your creations daily. Don’t let the job discourage you either…..very few of the greats were born rich either. Lots of really awesome artists have had to work shitty jobs while they improved their abilities.
