Goodbye, Mother Culture – A poem

Why don’t people smile when they’re alone?
When did alone become lonely?
What happened to our own best friend?

I was told ” Welcome to the real world. Life is stressful.”
And those words haunt me.
What kind of system have we built
that extreme stress
has become a simple side effect
of living?
This is existence.
There are no rules.

That’s when I heard the little hum.
A little song always sung.
Mother Culture, I hear her now.
Singing her little lullaby.
Constantly and quietly she whispers

” Life is stress. Do your best… To live according to the system.
Struggle means strength. Happiness a reward, not a right.”

And as our eyes grow heavier
and heavier,
our minds shrink.
As we unknowingly fall asleep,
Mother Culture begins her second verse:

” Mother Culture is here to protect you.
My laws show you right from wrong.
There is nothing bigger than my word.
I am the only option.

Disobey me,
and you’ll be punished,
That’s the right thing to do.
Existence comes with a price,
You cannot handle being free.”

Over and over again,
Her words delude.
This is the song that’s sung.

I have made a decision.
Mother Culture,
I am done with you.
You are strong because you are hidden.
But Loud and clear,
I now hear your voice,
but no longer will I listen.
This is my life,
My existence.
My freedom is my own.

Just so you know,
you’re losing your power.
People have begun to hear you.
You have no true authority,
you’re a hidden poison.
It is our turn to sing a song:

“I exist.
I am free.
My will creates my own way.

I will smile.
I will laugh.
I will enjoy my earthly stay.

And shall you try
To sing louder,
I promise you you’ll lose.

For the people have heard,
and it’s our turn now.
Love is in,
which means you are out.”

Goodbye Mother Culture,
I’m done with you.

Love it. Damn how I get sucked in by Mother Culture. Thanks for the reminder that the door to the cage is open…

I hadn’t thought about it that way – if only I was a bit more musically talented :P
