Has anyone wondered what will happen if this website becomes too mainstream?

I myself believe it will have both positive and negative effects. I would hate for this website to be pushed in a different direction. I would like to hear your opinions on this, so let me know what you think about this topic.
Has anyone wondered what will happen if this website becomes too mainstream?

By the way I just recently created an account but I have been on this site frequently for a few years now, I remember seeing it have less than 10,000 members.

@athousand, If it does become mainstream that’s a good thing, right? I mean the whole idea is about changing or creating solid perspectives, so the more people who visit the site the more people it can effect. Naturally the site becomes more diluted but such is life, all things must pass.

Just once the site doesn’t go all Kings of Leon and sell out we’ll be alright.

@athousand, If it goes mainstream then I’d say humanity is moving in the right direction.

Those were some of my thoughts as well, but the media will always play role in things. They will manipulate and change things to make it worse. I hope they would now sell out because this site is truly a wonderful thing.

I think the whole net thing is the beginning of the end. Net and Web is a good thing to call it after all.

If it’s mainstream I see it as a positive thing. The fact that the majority of the population has some interest in these topics would be a good sign.

@ijesuschrist, Google it.. what are you Descartes, trying to be all philosophical?
Mainstream- the ideas, attitudes, or activities that are regarded as normal or conventional; the dominant trend in opinion, fashion, or the arts.

@athousand, Nothing in essence will change, do not worry.

maybe this is unrelated, but maybe we could look at it with historical context, ‘whatever happened to the hippies?’

Who, me? (1) (@whome) 7 years, 10 months ago ago

@athousand, what is this “media” that strives to manipulate and make things worse? Is the “media” not made out of people?

The headline question sounds quite smug and self-absorbed to me. After all, each one of us is just like everybody else in the world, in that each one of us is unlike anybody else in the world.

@whome, well i apologize, i never intended to sound smug in any way. I am just saying i would not like this website to lose its general focus. I also said in the description that it could be positive or negative, on top of that i asked for other peoples opinions. Could you explain how it seemed self absorbed? I did not say it should not, i was simply asking what people think would happen. I did mess up when i included the word too in the title.

@athousand, It will not lose is general focus, Martijn & Jordan will not allow that. There will be changes of course (new version is coming soon) because we want to grow bigger, but it will all be for the benefit of all and in line with the current mission.

@athousand, “mainstream” is a heavily burdened word, especially (as you noted) when used in the context of “too mainstream”. It seems to imply that one thinks of oneself as more special than “the rest of them”. Of course, this was my perception and my initial reaction, and so, right now I am just as guilty of recreating this burden, this thought pattern, by seeing this “implied meaning”. As always, we both are correct and wrong simultaneously :-)

Man, it’s hard to debate with anyone when everything is true!

I think that this would definitely be a positive thing. I feel that in order to make true change in the world we need to, I guess, bust open the mainstream with the ideas, values, beliefs, etc. that so many people on this site hold true. I get the thought that trends in mainstream culture are kind of lame or whatever and I get frustrated by it myself sometimes, but people are going to be the way they are and you shouldn’t judge them or hold anything against them because of what they like or follow. We need to teach, love, and listen. I hope that makes some sense, sometimes it’s difficult for me to put my thoughts down in writing.

@motorik, And there will be more characters to replace them. What matters is that these kinds of discussions continue. And for 4.0 to fix all those damn spammers

@whome, thank you for explaining to me that what i said seemed selfish, but that was never my intention. Ha and your last sentence it true.

@fern808, thanks for your input, and i noticed i have some issues with optimism. It is my biggest problem, i do not discriminate nor judge. I just have trouble seeing the better possibilities, but that was my main purpose of creating this discussion so that i could hear opinions other than mine

It won’t become mainstream,at least not in a few years.First people have to be interested in the ideas discussed here and I don’t see that happening anytime soon. I certainly hope that the global society is moving in a direction where ideas like this are mainstream, and if it is,it will take a while to get there.
