HE becoming slow and prone to frequent outages

Anonymous (@)7 years, 5 months ago

Maybe it’s just me, but HE has been totally inaccessible for me twice this week alone, and overall the site feels quite sluggish most of the time. And this has been going on for quite a while…

I don’t think that’s acceptable for a site like this, how can we expect to grow the community if the technology supporting it isn’t scalable? a slow unreliable experience is not going to encourage engagement, it’s going to drive people away and piss people off :\

Can we please invest in better hosting?
A scalable Amazon EC2 cluster would help significantly, it’s the same infrastructure Instagram uses and its cheap.

Easy fix, don’t let something so trivial bring everything down.

Agreed.

@papashibshib, trust me you are not the only one aware of the site’s kinks and bugs. Jordan has basically been completely occupied with a number of other activities, including the Valhalla Movement, which have delayed several of the fixes he had planned for the website.

Hopefully in the not-too-distant future he will be able to address these needs and get the site back on track.

@papashibshib, have noticed the same – last night it was inaccessible – yet does frustration with this not denote attachment to an idea of how the site should work – might that not be a lesson in how we become attached to our idea of how life should work – leading to the arising of suffering because it does not meet our expectations – whatever the category(ies)?

@rickyferdon, true, but it can also lead to more getting done and a better general experience. Just gotta find balance in it all. If you see how something could be better, take that action, don’t let it overwhelm you, especially if you can’t/ aren’t doing anything about it.

@jaethedream, then would there not be attachment to “more getting done” and “a better general experience” and “could be better”?

@rickyferdon, I’m a web developer by profession :p I’m anal about things like that because that’s what i’m paid to deal with haha

I’m not frustrated, it’s not about attachment…
Load times have real world effects on how users interact with websites, it even affects search engine rankings…

http://blog.kissmetrics.com/loading-time/
As a general rule of thumb, 40% of people abandon a webpage that takes more than 3 seconds to load.

My idea of how a website should work is “reliably”.
The only reason i care is because i like HE :)

@papashibshib, yes sir – forgive if my words sounded personal towards you – that was not the intent – and i see your point for sure – to get the ‘message’ out and make this format accessible is important for sure – people are hungry and thirsty and HE provides food and drink

@rickyferdon, all good man =p i didn’t take it personally, I just wanted to get the message out there, make a little noise and hopefully bump it up the priority list a bit.

If anything, this is a “good problem” to have, because it means a lot of people want to access the site! and that’s great for everyone on HE :D

@rickyferdon, If one is drinking dirty water, they can take the time and effort to find a way to purify it and probably live longer. One can keep drinking dirty water and not even know there’s anything else and be just as happy, except maybe the periods of sickness. It doesn’t really matter, nothing really matters, realize this and do what you want.

I see the possibility of a better world and overall experience/ way to live by sharing what I learn, show others a better way to live. Sometimes it causes stress trying to get people to understand and just general labor of stuff I don’t always want to do but if I do something, it’s either because I want to, or to get to where I want to be. I see a world better than being a slave to the current oppressive system and general behavior of beings.

I don’t have to do what I do but I enjoy life more with something to do, a purpose. Sometimes one gets lost in a perception and lets it overwhelm and consume them, so I learn to remember to come back to the point where it’s not actually that serious. Let it go, focus on what you wish to and enjoy it. Some “suffer” from the same labor others enjoy. Perception. In life, we must constantly find balance.

Should we have stayed at “square 1”? Never utilizing tools to get food easier, never build shelter from harsh weather, develop weapons to kill the animals that once preyed on us. Or never even ran from or fought a predator because we believe to have realized that we would just get addicted to trying to find something better than getting eaten and end up just keep running and running fucking sucks. That’s a personal opinion. I’d rather find a better way to live even if I have to suffer first. Makes it all much better anyway. Life is suffering as life is bliss.

You can find a perception to negate the suffering from something; it’s all mental after all. Or you can “Suffer” for a bit to fix the physical problem causing suffering, also fixing it for others. I’d hardly even consider the journey to fixing such a problem as suffering, and even then, an easier one to form a relieving perception of.

This is 2013, no site should be slow by now. This is a major issue for any site worthy of its domain.

What’s bogging the site down? Lack of bandwidth, or sloppy coding? Or BOTH? No matter which one it is, fixing it should be quick and painless. More bandwidth or more stable hosting doesn’t cost much, and with a site that makes as much money as this one, even if it was costly it should be no problem.

There’s a lot of holes appearing in this ship, might wanna do something about that before it sinks.

And, again, I reiterate that I have spoken with Jordan numerous times about this and that a fix is on the horizon, but he has a lot on his plate that is hindering him from enacting any of the plans he has for resolving the issue.

In fact, as I am sure some of the more regular users may have noticed, Jordan hasn’t actually been on HE to discuss things in quite some time.
