How do you know you are an artist?

ofeliac (@ofeliac) 9 years, 5 months ago

It’s odd, I’ve never labelled myself as an artist, but many others have. What makes me one? What makes anyone one? And if “art is not about what you see, but what you make others see”, then does everybody become an artist because anybody can see art in anything?

I’ve thought about this before. I guess I think i’m an artist because people see my work and tell me I am, but when I compare myself to others work, I view my work as a mediocre first grader coloring pages.

I think you are an artist simply when you consider yourself to be one. Someone could, I suppose, consider themselves to be an artist by perfecting “the art of breathing” or something. I would say that one is an artist when they have an artistic talent in some field and enjoy making art or do it regularly, but I think “talent” is very broad and is completely based on opinion. I think it’s completely up to you.

@saracwatts, Exactly, I never hold my own artwork( be it a poem, drawing, etc.) in as high regard as someone else’s. It’s completely different, when you look at a work of art that isn’t your own, it’s easy to appreciate it without scrutiny. But I guess it’s because we are so much harder on ourselves, or maybe the definition of an artist is subjective.

@eliseruth, So then literally anybody can be an artist? Do we ever really consider everyone an artist?

@ofeliac, “I call myself an artist because I’m not afraid, I can orchestrate my life in a million different ways”

Art is creation, usually with the intent of the art to be pleasing to the senses. I would say if you find yourself enjoying creating things with your mind rather than mindlessly receiving whatever information is thrown at you(most of society) then youre on the right path.

@ojai, That’s a wicked quote :)

@shredder, Very true, so ultimately, everyone has potential to be an artist? Anybody can create art as long as it is profound, not mindless?

If you create art you are an artist. In a more colloquial sense it is someone that devotes a part of their life to creating art. Artists tend to move between arts from drawing to writing to acting, etc. Expression through art is a way of life for them.
I’m a hobby artist.

If you love creating things for the aesthetic appeal you’re an artist.

Pretty simple.

@ofeliac, I think so. I believe that art is about perception of beauty, and since everyone’s perception is ultimately different, I think anybody could be an artist. Everyone has that one thing that they love doing, and some excel at it. I could be an artist because I’m amazing at working on cars, or I cook wonderfully. Both of these things could be considered an art. Even makeup artists, I guess they could be artists too– the face is the canvas. Anything really, most everything is beautiful and art is beauty. But that’s just me
And no I don’t really think many people ever considers everyone an artist. I’m just saying i think if you wanted to, you could.

Yes, no art is mindless and anyone can be an artist but unfotunately not everyone will be.

My art is tough. It comes in different forms. Sometimes photography and other times making a video for a global meditation on 12/12/12 like this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3boqddWaF1g

@mercurial, hahaha what are you going on about? You seem entertained. All I meant by “is it” was is it that picture of me giving a thumbs up. I thought I had changed it and when I click my profile I see a different photo but on thumbnails I see the photo I put first of all of them. I see other users display pictures do the same thing…I’ve been meaning to ask about that.

I think you’re laughing at me saying is it as if I’m saying I’m doing something in that picture pertaining to that quote haha? Well, that’s just a song lyric and I feel as if it relates well to the topic.

youknowwhatimsayingmercurial?

I should have been more specific, though.

I read a quote once with these words: “You don’t know you’re a musician until you start doing your job.” :)

I’m an artist because I make things considered art in layman terms.Music,Graphic Designing,Creative Writing,and just doodling around.

Isn’t that what an artist is? Someone who does things considered as art?

@ziggy, Yep.
