I’m sure we’ve all seen videos like this before, but it’s still powerful and sickening.

How do you think images like this, hyper-sexuality and unrealistic portrayals of both women and men, affect relationships, attraction, and sexuality?

@vivaciouslyv,

Although our perception of what is attractive can be (slightly) affected by cultural transmission, attraction itself is a biological event–at bottom. There are reasons men are attracted to women with larger breasts, larger hips, and a fit body; it’s not just arbitrary. The human brain decides she is more capable of rearing children.

One of our primary tasks as a species is proliferation, the chemicals responsible for “attraction” are not concerned with feelings or fairness; they care about combining the best sets of genes.

@rexrf, I understand that, but then why are most celebrities unrealistically tiny and not naturally built for carrying children? Our society has turned away from larger hips and a fit body to unrealistic expectations like this photoshopped girl.

@vivaciouslyv, That’s why Kim Kardashian is here to save the world.

Oh, well I, and everyone I know (I think), find that “unrealistically tiny” thing a bit more than gross.

I’m not sure if that look is designed to attract men, or to build obsessed consumers out of women.

Sad…. But its everywhere we look..By taking an inventor of ourselves I think we will find these images hold a profound influence over our lives. Examples..dieting,clothing choices,apearence choices… Ask yourself this …Would I feel the same way about this image if she were a burn victim, Could an advertiser sell me this product,or idea if the models were all burn victims? Then explore in yourself how images influence your personal choices in life.

@beyond, I guess that’s one way to look at Kim Kardashian… Thanks for making me appreciate her a little, haha.

@rexrf
, it’s refreshing to hear you say that. Sometimes it’s frustrating because it feels like every guy wants realistically tiny. To be fair my ex-boyfriend was like that and made it clear that he felt that way, so my perception of what guys wanted was skewed for a long time.

@hummingbird-1
, I have thought about this a lot. Just curious, how do you think we could change this in our society at large? Do you think it would ever happen? How do we overcome the businesses/media/marketing schemes?

@beyond, Wait, Kim Kardashian is here to save us from superficiality? That seems a little contradictory ;)

@ginnyg, You do realize how hard it is to say something nice about her.

I believe it starts by being concious of media’s agenda,and each of us taking charge of our choices. Yes, we can change this senario by educating ourselves and others,and by not suporting the industries that create these unrealistic expectations. Lead by example! Be a leader,not a sheep,think and act for ourselves.

@hummingbird-1, Websites like this can be so powerful. I wish it reached farther, or mattered more to people.

@bono95zg, My point isn’t about naturally skinny and pretty. It’s about media created fake skinny and pretty.
