Is a person one personality, or multiple personalities?

Do we have one “personality” such as INFJ or ENFJ, or are we also multiple personalities? I mean, sometimes I feel like I could live in another era. Sometimes I feel like I am an animal, or a human, sometimes a girl in the 1920′s, sometimes a girl in the 21st century, sometimes a man, sometimes a woman, sometimes I feel like I’m my “American” persona, sometimes I’m more of my “Vietnamese” persona. Sometimes I act like a child, sometimes like an adult. This has always confused me. I thought I could only be one person. Who am I?

Anybody read Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse and care to discuss with me? If not, just read the following passage and I would still love discussion over it:

“The mistaken and unhappy notion that a man is an enduring unity is known to you. It is also known to you that man consists of a multitude of souls, of numerous selves. The separation of the unity of the personality into these numerous pieces passes for madness. Science has invented the name schizo mania for it. Science is in this so far right as no multiplicity may be dealt with unless there be a series, a certain order and grouping. It is wrong insofar as it holds that one only and binding and lifelong order is possible for the multiplicity of subordinate selves. This error of science has many unpleasant consequences, and the single advantage of simplifying the work of the state-appointed pastors and masters and saving them the labors of original thought. In consequence of this error many persons pass for normal, and indeed for highly valuable members of society, who are incurably mad; and many, on the other hand, are looked upon as mad who are geniuses. Hence it is that we supplement the imperfect psychology of science by the conception that we call the art of building up the soul. We demonstrate to anyone whose soul has fallen to pieces that he can rearrange these pieces of a previous self in what order he pleases, so attain to an endless multiplicity of moves in the game of life.”

I love his idea that we are not just one unity as human beings, but mixes of multiple souls that we can use to create whatever lives we want. I mean I think “sanity” and “insanity” are not two separate things. We lie on a spectrum between these two and the boundaries are vague. It makes so much sense that maybe some people we call crazy, are geniuses…

The current system demands of you to decide which box to fit in. Or which boxes. But it doesn’t have to be that way?

@lastunicorn, none of the above.

I like to think that I can’t be disturbed by the fact that I’m a Christian, although this is strictly a cultural and social personality. My real personality is curious why the days of the week have names.

both! multiple personalities united into one personality that is constantly changing, just like everything else in the universe. Your personality is no exception.

Is a team a bunch of individuals, or one unified movement?
It’s both.

As with anything that looks like one, if you look closer you’ll see that it’s not one, you’ll see the details, the bumps and grooves, the spaces in between.

We all have multiple personae, but it’s not like only one is active at a time, they’re all acive to different degrees all the time. Pay attention and you’ll feel the transistion from one mode to another, one persona stepping up and another stepping down.
By self-discovery, you can learn how to control them. Makes every aspect of life a whole lot easier.

People are either unaware or in denial, either way it’s lame and it’s crippling their lives.
