I’m in my second year of college. I went to a religious college for one year, hated it. Took a year off and now I’m commuting to a local college. I haven’t even decided on a major yet but I’m contemplating if college is even worth it. I understand it may lead to a better paying job but that’s up in the air. It doesn’t guarantee anything except lots of debt. I was wondering if you could share your experiences and wether or not you think college is the right thing to do.
Typical Confused College Student
Hi! I am going to chime and say it depends. Having a degree will open up job opportunities for you in the future. A lot of employers don’t even care if you have a degree in a related field, just that you have one. I chose to not go to college since I felt A) What’s the point of spending money when you don’t know what you want to do and B) I had been told all my life that going to college was the ONLY way to be successful. Being the rebellious person I am I wanted to prove that I can make it without a degree. HOWEVER there are a lot of great things about going to college and I have had to deal with having less job opportunities. I have always been interested in being self-employed so that later doesn’t bother me too much. Here are 4 Questions I learned from one of my mentors that can help you understand you life’s direction. These will help you find your “industry” or give you clues as to what you life’s work is.
1 – What did you grow up around? (We create subconscious maps at very young ages so it’s good to be aware of any clues in your past)
2 – What have strangers consistently compliment you on? (Can show you your strengths)
3 – What did you want to do at 14? (We have less fear at that age.)
4 – What can you talk about effortlessly on a Sat night? (Finding something that you enjoy)
Hopes this helps bit. I know it’s a tough choice and taking on that much debt feels tough since your just getting started in the world. I ultimately haven’t chosen to go to college but if I knew I really wanted to go in a certain direction (like being an Herbalist or a Naturopathic doctor) I would go.
