Martial Arts is about fitness as a baseline, work on speed and reaction time, but I think most importantly is about discipline over base impulses; this does not mean getting rid of them, just keeping them in perspective so they do not interrupt your mental assessments.
Fear especially; in a fight you will have fear, this is not a bad thing because the adrenalin actually fuels your muscles and mind into a heightened state, but if you allow the impulse to over-ride your ability to read your opponent and your options then you become susceptible.
But look into it, the discipline part is very much a life lesson that can extend far beyond just the fight stuff.
I used to instruct Korean Tae-Kwon-Do and it kept me in the best shape of my life. For the past few years I’ve been searching for Kung Fu dojos in the Tri-State area and can’t find any close by… I say just watch fight’s on youtube and study their skills. Learn internal kung fu, which is all visualization, and you will have more peace within yourself. I’ve learned many techniques from people I’m around and developed my own style of self defense. Look up some Aikido videos and Shoalin monk videos on youtube and study them
