Life's Cheat Codes

TEDMoseby (@redpuck26) 9 years, 8 months ago

I was talking to a close friend over the weekend, and we pretty much concluded that life is like an elaborate video game (like the matrix). Everything can be broken down into its fundamental parts and learned like a skill. Even the very things that make us who we are like our personality can be trained (meditation).

I am wondering what people think about using cheat codes in this game we call life. Just like little kids use cheat codes to beat levels in video games, people use cheat codes: we drink coffee to heighten our senses, get drunk so we can talk to girls at the bar, etc. These are seemingly harmless examples, but as a species we are getting very very good at finding nature’s cheat codes.

If you think about what an anti-depressant is, its manipulating someones neuro-chemical profile to alter someones personality. Humanities ability to hack into all kinds of things is only improving exponentially. Genetic engineering is promising to be the technology that dominates this next decade, and we are now at the point where we can consciously engineer our own biology.

Personally I struggle with which cheat codes I am ok using. I like taking drugs that enhance my social life, but I realize these can be a crutch. I think back on when i was a kid, and how people felt about those who needed the cheat codes to beat the game.

Love to hear some thoughts.

I think if it’s any game it’s like a Mario game. What you see as cheats are simple one ups or one downs (a mushroom or a goomba). There is no saving- you just go go go. Then when you think you’ve reached the end you haven’t. Haha

Great post! sometimes cheat codes are just necessary if you want to keep playing the game

I mean, if it’s a game, it’s more like that Doodle God game. It’s not cheating because we were given all of the tools. We were given them at their most basic level, though.

-Intelligence, but we have to progress with the intelligence to get to the point where we can figure out cures to illness
-We were given elements to work with, but they were in natural forms and we learned to combine them and synthesize them.

It’s not really cheating to me. It’s just using what we were given to the greatest extent.

As i was reading the only game i could relate this to was GTA San Andreas. I feel that if you don’t use ‘cheat codes’ in life, then life just becomes 10 times harder. Take steroids for example, if you don’t take them you just have to work 10 times harder at what you’re trying to achieve physically. Mind you, the people on steroids generally work harder than the people who don’t use them so i would relate that to this one level on GTA San Andreas that i got stuck on. The mission where you have to shoot down all these little toy planes from the top of a building… never passed it to this day.

Using cheat codes with life might have the same result with using cheat codes with games; having the challenge removed, it all becomes too easy and suddenly boring… You gain nothing from the game and go to the next one to find something interesting to do. What’s the real-life alternative?

To me, laws are built around life’s cheat codes. As I see it, the codes are stealing or doing other things for your own selfish needs that are to the detriment of the rest of society’s interests.

The physical world has laws in which we have to abide to. There are no cheat codes. However, when you die, and you will, perhaps that is when this “cheat code” you speak of will occur. Everything is energy and energy never dies, therefore, neither do you and I.

Edit: Although, maybe I was speaking of something way different, like altering physical reality. If there were any cheat codes they would be psychedelic drugs that alter our consciousness and help us evolve at a much faster rate.

Just like with the games, I think you can get a lot more satisfaction from playing the “game” of life straight. Not saying that some recreational drugs and alcohol are that bad, as long as they’re not used to death. But when you finish the game, do you tell your friends you cheated, or do you tell them you beat the game with your own mad skills.

My sore point is genetic modification in particular, it’s not healthy, not natural, and will probably end up wiping out who we are and replacing us with robots. Sorry to those who like that idea, I enjoy being human and experiencing life the way I am, I feel privileged to be biodegradable.

And I definitely agree with Dimitris.

Humans are cheating all the time and its that cheating that is destroying us. Braces correct teeth that would otherwise seem unattractive. Breast enhancements for the most part help the woman gain male companionship or just men swooning over them rather than other women. Cosmetic surgery making one seem different than they are.Even fragrances and deodorants, smell is a key part in finding a suitable mate. Women tend to steer clear of an odor they find displeasing due to the fact that it means they have a similar immunity and could possibly related to them. genes need to mix and spread, but useless ones should die off. Everything we do to alter our appearance and brain chemistry is halting evolution.

@staringatstars, I agree with you on the breast enhancement analogy and all that. But what if we were to view them as “power ups” as opposed to cheat codes.

Im no woman, but what if I was a totally empowered female who understands the concept that men like awesome boobs. Isn’t there a way to enhance your body mindfully with the understanding that you are not your boobs.
I’m just asking the question since I don’t necessarily believe this to be true.

The easiest example I can use in my own life, is the need to drink to go out. It helps kill the inner dialogue and the flinch response that tells me not to approach that girl. i am mindful of this and understand alcohol as the crutch that it is.

Alcohol is like a power up. These power ups are all around us and part of the game. What’s wrong with using them?

I think that these life cheat codes are exactly what HE is all about. Finding simple ways to make our lives way better.

Some of my favorite cheat codes that I use and plan on using as much as possible in the future (I am not saying that I properly use all of these, just that these are great shortcuts that I recognize I should properly use to achieve a better life):

Cultivating Positive Addictions:
(you become addicted to something good for you, what can be better?)
-Working out
-meditating
-eating healthy food
-being with those I love to be with

Drugs:
-Shrooms-cheatcode to seeing the world from a different and enlightening perspective
-alcohol-cheatcode to social ease
-weed-cheatcode to finding anything interesting (not that good of a shortcut for me because I have a bad weed memory, but i still enjoy it)

My general cheatcodes to living a great life (still working on all of these big time, not very good at any of them):
-Trying to be content with what I have
-Try to live in the present moment (meditation helps a lot)
-Try to exercise love and compassion as much as possible
-Don’t give a fuck about what other people think

Hell yeah, yesterday I punched the air twice, pulled out a pistol, put it away again, jumped, turned left, then right, then looked down, then up, then turned left again, and punched the air again and after that a jetpack appeared on my back and I flew to work. It was pretty cool. I love real life cheat codes.

This is a great analogy but really i think this is what the game is meant to be like, these are not cheats, were just only realising the terms at which we play now. These are the options we have – it’s just which ones we should choose that we’ve forgotten. It’s like we are just rediscovering the abilities that we posses to take charge over our life.

alcohol is not changing your physical appearance though. ok ill put it to you this way. A man married a woman and had a kid with her a couple years go by and he sues his wife stating that his child was ugly and that it was his wifes fault because he did not know that she had loads of plastic surgery before dating/marrying her, true story. the woman may feel that she is impowering herself but the her small boob genes go to her daughter so then should her daughter to the same as mommy and augment her breast? its all about attraction and symmetry and ultimately physical prowless. Why do you think women obsess over guys asses, its something that is unconscious to them to an extent. the reason a firm butt on a guy is great is because its shows great physicality and the man will be able to fill her with an offspring much better than an out of shape man and with a better suited offspring. The whole boob thing with guys is that yeah its esthetically pleasing but it also shows symmetry with the ass on the body and denotes to a fertile woman who can feed her offspring, so that mans offspring will survive. We are all animals when it comes down to it and even in my own life i see where the most carnal senses apply when it comes to attraction. its all about adaption and survival but if no one is truly adapting or picking based on the best genes then were really not always going to get the best combinations. Oh and get this a tribe in africa had their voices recorded and the men who produced more offspring had a deeper voice and the women who had more children had a higher pitched voice, it was pretty cool to watch. ill try to ost back with the link. BTW its great everyone can be who they are and “better” themselves, but hell why cant anyone be proud of who they are? It just seems like the only people who do it use it to gain power, like boobs jobs do alot, or because they hate that part of themselves.

@redpuck26, I drink all kinds of coffee and beer and I still don’t have infinite health or unlimited ammo. Although I haven’t checked my mana levels yet!

I have thought about this before. Especially when taking an antidepressant, to change my total mindset and pull me out of a pit of despair. There is also adderrol…who doesn’t use it in college these days? Is it really fair, and healthy for everyone to be on it? Since classes are graded on curves, it is unfair to people who don’t take it. It reminds me of the steroid scandal in baseball, many players took them because without doing so, they were at a serious disadvantage.

you want to talk about cheat codes, you start the conversation with this little gem: http://singularityhub.com/2012/02/29/weight-loss-pill-recommended-by-fda-panel-companys-stock-doubles/

This is an AWESOME topic, and represents an angle/view/perspective that I myself hold. Everything is cause and effect, and when we break things down to their most fundamental, basic components, we are then able to TRULY understand how things work.

Also, ABACABB.

+1 to the first person who knows what I’m referring to : )

I don’t think is a thing called a life-cheat-code because I don’t think there’s anything called a rule (that isn’t just made up by people)

Is it still a cheat code if everyone is using them? or have they become part of the game… I agree with the Mario analogy.

@rickvonstar, You, my HE friend get the prize. After many years of stress, unhappiness, a couple of career changes (forced), I have discovered the secret…there are no rules. There are so many “supposed to” ideas imbedded in society that most people walk around not knowing anything about themselves. They just go with whatever “happens to them” and they never question because “this is how it’s supposed to be.”
Before anyone says something about legal issues as rules, allow me to preempt. Yes, if we like to maintain our freedom, then we must follow the legalities of society. However, for those of you with that in mind think of it all this way (someone already mentioned The Matrix so)…
“This is a sparring program, similar to the programmed reality of the Matrix. It has the same basic rules, rules like gravity. What you must learn is that these rules are no different than the rules of a computer system. Some of them can be bent, others can be broken. Understand?” -Morpheus

Using cheat codes is the way that life should be lived. Sure, it may be looked down upon by those who think that it is considered “cheating”, but it’s only by those who want you to live life by the pre-structured confines of the “story mode”. The cheat codes will allow you to live life by your own terms.

Just as the way cheat codes work in video games, you can break free from the structured story of the game and fly around as you desire. Break free from the social norm of “playing story mode” and fly around life as you desire!
