@healingchime, a good summary of what happens when we successfully meditate. Careful not to dwell too too much on attaining “power” as this can leads novices into a “dualistic” state of Wanting/Desire which will only delay his/her progress…

some good techniques for attaining a thought-free state:

@tigerturban, Thanks for listening and for your kind feedback. Power is what we are, no need to fear it or avoid the power. Some may come looking for something external, but the power of inner knowing is grace that covers all faults. Essentially there is no mistake that can be made when the heart is looking for it’s source! Peace

Here is my friend Christopher’s essay, Here my guru illustrates succinctly, “The Wanting Mechanism”

Wanting Mechanism

What is one of the most important factors in keeping us diverted from meditation in the here and now? Look inside your mind and find the wanting mechanism. The wanting mechanism continuously constructs images of new experiences the mind desires, derived from memories of the past. The mind becomes enamored with these new fantasy images and is diverted from what actually is, here and now. The eternal cosmic consciousness exists here and now, never in the future, and never in the past. Future and past are illusory and do not exist in any real physical form outside of projections of the mind. What exists now is everything, and you already have it. You only need to become conscious of your own wealth.

Wanting is part of life, creativity, family building, wealth creation, and the survival instinct. In the sense of preserving the human race on planet earth, wanting is a very good thing. In the sense of an individual becoming an awakened Buddha, wanting is a hindrance. Wanting creates duality, the wanter and that which is desired. The essay, Call For a New Buddhism, touches on this issue. Siddhartha Gautama taught that desire is a root cause of suffering. But who was he speaking to and who can actually take the last steps to enlightenment by dropping the wanting mechanism totally?

Not wanting means not wanting anything, not just dropping the desire for sex, money, and power, but also dropping the desire for truth, justice, family, and nation. It is not what you want that matters, it is the wanting mechanism itself that is the barrier. Deep meditation is a giant leap beyond logic and the norms of society. It is dissolving into infinity and oblivion and not coming back. Very few humans have been able to manage that radical transformation totally and that is why enlightenment will always be an extremely rare phenomena.

If everyone in the world suddenly became enlightened, in my opinion, the human race would come to an end. There would be a lack of sufficient desire to keep people motivated enough to have families, raise children, grow crops, and protect society from all the natural threats, from disease to ecological disaster. That said, I certainly believe that enlightenment is a desirable goal for those who really want it. But you can see the impossibility of the situation. When you “want” enlightenment your wanting mechanism is still active and enlightenment will not happen to you. So we can breathe easy that everyone in the world will not become enlightened, all at the same time, anytime soon.

The need for meditation many people feel is beyond normal logic and beyond the scope of words to fully express. I can tell you that a key to experiencing superconsciousness, from the moment you wake up in the morning until the moment you fall asleep at night, is to step back from the wanting mechanism. This stepping back is only possible for those who have reached at least the fourth stage (see The Seven Bodies). Otherwise you will not have the energy and clarity to see the wanting mechanism and realize what is involved in turning it off. You will suppress desires and live a false life because you have not yet found the inner key, which is an intense form of self-observation, not suppression. Therefore, in a way, I am stating publicly that which should remain unspoken. If you try to artificially stop wanting when you are in the first body you will never reach the second body. Even in the third body this method of not wanting will only slow down your progress, because it will be a false effort.

I do not know how long it takes for this process of stepping back from the wanting mechanism to become 100% effective. As an ordinary student, I am only now, after decades of effort, beginning to make any real progress with it. I felt obligated to mention this esoteric topic because this Web page was constructed to convey all of the best methods and the most usable of the secret teachings. Ending the wanting mechanism had to be mentioned and those who are ready for that step will find that it brings time to a halt, annihilates the future and the past, and expands consciousness to the far reaches of the universe. It is a silent, inner explosion.

Ask yourself these questions.

1) If you want something, how can you stop thinking about it?

2) If you don’t want anything, what is there to think about?

3) If you don’t want anything, is there anything to be angry about?

4) If you don’t want anything, is there anything to make you unhappy?

5) Rocks and other inanimate objects do not want and do not suffer, but they are unconscious and dead. How does a living human being enter a no-wanting state while fully conscious and filled to the brim with life energy? That is the incredible contradiction and difficulty in becoming enlightened.

At some point on your own noble path you will see very clearly that wanting is a barrier. That realization may hit you suddenly like a freight train (my blood is still on the tracks) or gradually creep into your consciousness over time. Only when you see it clearly on your own should you try to step back from the wanting mechanism. Until that right time occurs you will be needed to save this beautiful planet earth, to raise families, and to be good citizens. Take meditation one step at a time. Do not try to imitate the final steps into the abyss while you are still at the foot of the mountain.

@tigerturban, Thanks! That’s a great discourse. The truth that comes from not wanting is magnificent, undeserved, and never achieved. The mind can want an elephant, but if I know I am not the mind, I simply don’t mind~

@healingchime, “Take meditation one step at a time. Do not try to imitate the final steps into the abyss while you are still at the foot of the mountain.”

It seems my words are too confident for you! That’s ok. I don’t mind. I am your own self!

@tigerturban, “incredible contradiction and difficulty in becoming enlightened”

everyone is light, and enlightened. There is only one being, the absolute love, expressing and dancing, playfully putting on this magnificent show. You are that. I am that. The one who will become enlightened needs to disappear.

Truth simply is. Being truth, as you are, is the easiest of all. Anyone can do it.

@healingchime, If you do not do methods you will never develop any inner power. Meditation methods put direct pressure on the false self, the ego. If you continue patient practice at some point that false self will implode under the pressure, without warning and without apparent and obvious method. 99.99% of people who drop methods stop far too soon, thus bringing their progress to an early end.

@tigerturban, no practice is needed to be. Enlightenment is the only thing that never changes. if it can be attained through practice, there was a time in awareness when it was not. Pure awareness always is, had to be there before the dream of being a person, and when the false self “dies” the one who was there the whole time remains as they were.
Every experience comes and goes. The experience is a dream, and the raw experience is the beingness, the light, and the enlightenment.

Desire takes the form of an ideal state, then practice is used to ‘get to’ that imagined possibility. All of this is appearing in the perfection of your unbound awareness. It’s fantastic, because no amount if striving makes you disappear. You remain as the bliss knowing the human experience, enjoying every element for what it is, free beyond the concept of free, with no state to maintain and nothing to go after. it is spontaneous joy and bliss, a play of cosmic detail and order.

@tigerturban, also, inner power cannot be developed. It was there in full capacity before birth, it is what allows your baby body to form, and continues to create your daily experience. Your power is immaculate, pure, and everlasting. your power never changes. That is why it is power.

Weakness is to imagine you have no power and that it must be gained through imaginary actions. There is no one doing anything ever. You never existed as a body. All the body’s actions were determined aspects of the universal flow. You are that!

@healingchime, Zen Buddhists say you should live in a state of “no-mind.” A more accurate term would be no-thought, as the human mind-brain has other basic autonomic survival functions that continue even if the conscious thought process comes to a halt. Interrupting the mind’s constant stream of thoughts, however, is enough to allow cosmic consciousness to enter your body. You do not enter it. It is more accurate to say that the ultimate consciousness, the Atman, enters you. You can never own the Atman, or put your personal brand on it, but it can save you from the pettiness and misery inherent to the limited human mind.

Meditation, like gardening, is a relatively simple affair that requires honest effort and patience. It is not a highly complex intellectual task, such as the study of DNA or astrophysics. You can read all you need to know about meditation in just one hour. A few simple pointers are enough to get students meditating and on a path to growing awareness. You cannot read your way to enlightenment, but you can read your way to the loony bin. Books stimulate the thinking function of the brain, making your mind spew out even more thoughts at a faster pace. Meditation means transcending the conflict and limitations of the world of thought and entering the naturally serene state of no-thought.

Meditation techniques do work, and with effort average individuals can push themselves ahead in consciousness to the equivalent of 10%, 20%, or even 30% of a fully enlightened state. Consciousness comes in degrees of intensity and fullness, and it is far better to be 30% enlightened than not enlightened at all. Tibetan Buddhists take 4 and 5 year old boys and stick them into monasteries in order to grow their brains to become enlightened monks like so many hothouse tomatoes. This strategy works to some degree due to the neuroplastic nature of the brain. If you start early enough, while the central nervous system is still forming, you can grow the brain to function in a way that is conducive to meditation.

Our brains change and adapt with our behavior. If you meditate day after day, year after year, your meditation becomes easier and more powerful as your brain structure changes itself to accommodate your lifestyle. This is what is meant by the term ‘neuroplasticity.’ Tibet has produced many semi-Buddhas through the wholesale grooming of children to become Buddhist monks, but India has always been the powerhouse for producing full Buddhas, not just half Buddhas or near Buddhas. Indian sages are almost always lone individuals who are born destined to become enlightened. They are not part of any theocracy or army of monks, and they usually become enlightened completely alone. Their enlightenment does not come from virtue or past life experience, but from the Indian brain structure which is the most suited to the superconscious state. History shows that the genetic oddity of enlightenment is most prevalent in India males, and this is a mystery scientists should explore in further detail. Tibetan, Chinese, and Japanese monks have practiced meditation for centuries, but on average they have had to work twice as hard to achieve half the results. In the West, aside from George Gurdjieff, full dramatic enlightenment is almost in total absence. To date, the West has produced many great scientists, philosophers, artists, and scholars, but very few living Buddhas.

@tigerturban, the truth is simple. Nothing is required to be. There is a big hint there when you are ready to drop the mind and open the heart. You are the no mind that you speak of.

@healingchime, platitudes, my friend…perhaps you are a little out your depth here..or are trying to sell something. The amount of scientific AND spiritual evidence against your overly-simplistic arguments, is gigantic.

You need to learn more and…be more open to these new/ancient ideas…

@tigerturban, Perhaps I am the truth slapping you on the head with yourself. Listen. You are it. Some later time, when you become it, you will know you were it all along, you will think back to this and have a good chuckle. This is universal. There is nothing else but you buddy.

The you that knows is imaginary. You are nothing. I am nothing. All this searching is for nothing. Be nothing now without effort. You are already that.

@healingchime, And to sum it up? We are all mentally-deranged blobs of grease until we meditate for a awhile and go beyond mere “conceptual reckoning”, beyond the mind.

@tigerturban, The cold heart cannot comprehend the mysteries of the universe. Calling someone a novice for telling you that you are the truth and ultimately powerful is an aspect of your fear manifesting as judgment.

Your words reflect how you see yourself. By looking clearly at why you see yourself this way, you can open to the call of your heart. The need to dismiss my words is your dismissal of your own power. Notice how I have not dismissed anything you say, I only continue to emphesis the truth as it is revealed in my living experience.

You were attracted to this thread because the universe wanted to break your false identity in one go. And it worked. Best of luck, I am happy to have had this wonderful discussion.
