Songwriters: John Kay
DON’T STEP ON THE GRASS, SAM
From the 1968 release “The Second”
Words and music by John Kay

Starin’ at the boob tube, turnin’ on the big knob
Tryin’ to find some life in the waste land
Fin’ly found a program, gonna deal with Mary Jane
Ready for a trip into hate land
Obnoxious Joe comes on the screen
Along with his guest self-righteous Sam
And one more guy who doesn’t count
His hair and clothes are too far out

While pushin’ back his glasses Sam is sayin’ casually
“I was elected by the masses”
And with that in mind he starts to unwind
A vicious attack on the finest of grasses

Well it’s evil, wicked, mean and nasty
(Don’t step on the grass, Sam)
And it will ruin our fair country
(Don’t be such an ass, Sam)
Well, it will hook your Sue and Johnny
(You’re so full of bull, Sam)
All will pay that disagree with me
(Please give up you already lost the fight, alright)

Misinformation Sam and Joe
Are feeding to the nation
But the one who didn’t count counted them out
By exposing all their false quotations
Faced by a very awkward situation
This is all he’d say to save the day

Well it’s evil, wicked, mean and nasty
(Don’t step on the grass, Sam)
And it will ruin our fair country
(Don’t be such an ass, Sam)
Well, it will hook your Sue and Johnny
(You’re so full of bull, Sam)
All will pay that disagree with me
(Please give up you already lost the fight alright)

You waste my coin Sam, all you can
To jail my fellow man
For smoking all the noble weed
You need much more than him
You’ve been telling lies so long
Some believe they’re true
So they close their eyes to things
You have no right to do
Just as soon as you are gone
Hope will start to climb
Please don’t stay around too long
You’re wasting precious time

I need to point out that this song was recorded in 1968 when the states had draconian laws against marijuana possession and sales. I deeply admire President Obama and voted for his election twice.

@sobroquet, uh, I wouldn’t give him too much credit just yet. He doesn’t appear to have much to do with it and still isn’t taking action to legalize it across the board. Even in the states where it is legal, it’s up to the individual counties, and some are still going after people for it. Heck, here in Obama’s adopted home state today and his adopted home town of Chicago, I just heard that a guy on the news just got busted for having a million bucks worth of weed. He’s getting felony charges. That person’s life is screwed forever now. Granted, the guy was probably a gangbanger anyway but still – Obama is still turning a blind eye to weed, on a national level. People’s lives are still being ruined by the laws, all under Obama’s supposedly progressive watch. Say one thing, do another. Say he’s going to solve problems, then go to Hawaii and play golf while the nation burns. That’s Obama’s game.

I don’t mean to be mean to you, but I really don’t like Obama one bit.

Oh I appreciate your sentiments immensely, I hail from a state (Texas) where people got life sentences for the evil reefer. Attorney General Holden has just declared that Justice Dept. will allowing ‘legal’ pot farmers and sellers lawful banking privileges without intervention. That alone eliminates the risk for them having to deal in cash only, which made them very vulnerable to robbery. President Obama is in a terrible dilemma as a man. He needs to be a role model (which is one reason he gave up tobacco), and he has openly admitted to having smoked pot as a young man. He isn’t flawless, politics is like that. But compared to the crass, arrogant corrupt president he preceded, he’s untouchable. He is after all, a genuine scholar and gentleman.

@sobroquet, I know he is only one person and therefore can’t be held accountable for everything that goes wrong under his watch, but I’m still not a fan. I feel his flaws are too great to ignore or forgive, so I think we’ll have to respectfully agree to disagree.
