My brother and I both keep a journal that we write down quotes in, both funny and serious. He’s in the Marines so I only get to see him a few times a year, but we always exchange quotebooks when we can. These are a few of my favorites.

The past was perhaps different from the way we like to perceive it. -Joan Didion

Our vocabulary of the emotions has become critically impoverished. -Sam Hammill

More inaccessible than the ice cold mountains, more profound than the midnight sea; the solitude of self. -Elizabeth Cady Stanton

Find out who you are and do it on purpose. -Dolly Parton

Proximity to death brings with it a corresponding proximity to life. -Tim O’Brian

Stalking is a such a negative word, I prefer affectionate hide-and-go-seek. -My friend Bryan

People take different roads seeking fulfillment and happiness. Just because they’re not on your road, doesn’t mean they’ve gotten lost. -H. Jackson Brown Jr.

Calm can be just as contagious as panic. -Colonel B.P. McCoy

Rain, thanks for the link. here’s some ben franklin

“wise men talk because they have something to say; fools talk because they have to say something”
I’ve just realized I am the fool in this saying.

“The best thing to give to your enemy is forgiveness; to an oponent, tolerance; to a friend, your heart; to your child, a good example;to your father, deference; to your mother, conduct that will make her proud of you;to your self, respect; to all men charity” – ben franklin

“To find out a girl’s faults, praise her to her girl friends” – ben franklin

“There is nothing more dreadful than the habit of doubt.Doubt separates people. It is a poison that disintegrates friendships, and breaks up pleasant relations. It is a thorn that irritates and hurts; it is a sword that kills”-buddha

“Each second we live is a new and unique moment of the universe, a moment that will never be again. And what do we teach our children? We teach them that two and two make four, and that Paris is the capital of France. When will we also teach them what they are? We should say to each of them: Do you know what you are? You are a marvel. You are unique. In all the years that have passed, there has never been another child like you. Your legs, your arms, your clever fingers, the way you move. You may become a Shakespeare, a Michelangelo, a Beethoven. You have the capacity for anything. Yes, you are a marvel. And when you grow up, can you then harm another who is, like you, a marvel? You must work, we must all work, to make the world worthy of its children.”-pablo picasso

The things we touch have no permanence;
…there is nothing we can hold onto in this world.
Only by letting go can we truly possess what is real.

from, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

The quest is to be liberated from the negative, which is really our own will to a nothingness. And once having said yes to the instant, the affirmation is contagious, it bursts into a chain of affirmations that knows no limit. To say YES to one instant, is to say yes to ALL of existence.

from, Waking Life [man in bar]

When you’re traveling, you are what you are right there and then. People don’t have your past to hold against you. No yesterdays on the road.

~William Least Heat-Moon [Blue Highways]

i am a pacifist but if you want things to go mean and dirty…wallow in your own dirt.
tehehehe. ;)

“The consciousness of loving and being loved brings a warmth and richness to life that nothing else can bring.”

~Oscar Wilde

The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.
~Mahatma Gandhi

When you are in a state of nonacceptance, it’s difficult to learn. A clenched fist cannot receive a gift, and a clenched psyche–grasped tightly against the reality of what must not be accepted–cannot easily receive a lesson.

~Roger John

Have patience with everything unresolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves as if they were locked rooms or books written in a very foreign language. Don’t search for the answers, which could not be given to you now, because you would not be able to live them. And the point is to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps then, someday far in the future, you will gradually, without even noticing it, live your way into the answer.

~Rainer Maria Rilke (Letters to a Young Poet)

Losing everything is at the same time the scariest, as well as the most liberating experience you can have. When you have something you’ve got to protect it from disappearing. And so worry becomes a resident in your heart. When you’ve got nothing, your heart overflows with gratitude for every offering you receive.

Amen. =)

All men dream, but not equally, those that dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act upon their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible.

~T.E. Lawrence

@rain, Do whatever you want to do in life, because in the end when you die none of it is going to matter.
