my own religion.

koalo (@koalo) 8 years, 9 months ago

I am an atheist. that being said, I have created my own religion. at the center (god) is some part of my being, archangels are comprised of dear friends and family. other lesser but just as important folks are angels. it helps give me a respect and kindness for people that I previously didn’t think twice about.

there’s more to it but does anyone else have a similar thing that just works for them?

Do you intend on having followers?

Ah ok, then I misunderstood your use of the word religion. For me it means a collective consciousness. For others its just a system of beliefs or rules to abide by.. Whatever the case, why do you need a religion anyway? Being atheist is already a religion. You believe in that, so you believe in something.
Instead of going into the unseen, unknown spiritual world to explain the visible, why not just focus on the visible? You said you now have respect and kindness for people who you barely know. Why not explore that further, see how it makes you feel, understand why you feel that. No need to bring angels or religion into the equation, simply define this thing for you. Dont label it, don’t give it a type… Simply enjoy it. Be you, this new found kindness and respect IS you, you are that. Continue to be that and add more to it, everything you desire to be…. No need for more religions brother, dont limit yourself like that.

Whats the point of having your own religion, it obviously is not the truth if you have thought of it off the top of your head. Why believe in a lie?

koalo (1) (@koalo) 8 years, 9 months ago ago

Hm, thanks. I should simply enjoy it more. @emjay
as for it being a lie of the top of my head, it could be. but it makes me happy. it simplifies things. all these isms n schisms attracted me and I never found solice in them.

do y’all have a particular believe set?

@koalo, The best religion is that you can believe whatever you want. If it would make you closer to your family and your dear ones, you can make it as fantastic as you wish.

Yes. Rock and roll will never die.

@koalo, Would you not rather live knowing reality for what it really is rather than trying to escape it? I personally highly value the truth, the truth is the only thing which will ever remain constant.

I agree entirely. but what’s your truth?

Yes I have a belief system I haven’t really called it a religion because that words has very negative feelings behind it for me and as I say; words do not always give a common understanding.

It is my belief that the mind and one own consciousness is a very powerful tool. the placebo effect tells me that the mind is powerful. whatever you believe to be true is true. whether your Atheist, Hindu, Buddhist, Pagan, or Christian. If you truly believe it and life your live in a good manor. Most importantly if you ponder the ideas of it, who the hell am I to tell you your wrong. There is no sure and true religion all we have are our own personal beliefs. Anyone that blindly follows is wrong they are doing it because of fear and life is more then that. life should be celebrated. Think for yourself and EVERYONE should have there OWN “religion”

@scott3600, there is no much thing as absolute truth. just perception.

My belief system stems from many religions (Buddhism, Daoism, Hinduism) sciences (Quantum Theory, Physics) forms of art (Music, books, paintings) and my experiences.
I gain nothing by calling it a religion, or even wasting time thinking of what I would name certain parts. I gain nothing by over-contemplating an after-life.
Actually, everyone has their own “religion”- They may even call it the same thing, but they definitely interpret differently. Even if it is science. Hawking and Einstein would’ve looked at things differently.

@emjay, How is atheism a religion? That’s like saying a hamburger has ham.

Paula (28) (@the1paula) 8 years, 9 months ago ago

I kind of have one. It’s mainly Christian based, but pretty much ignores The Bible. I believe there is a greater being that created everything. How he/she/it came to be can only be understood in death. I believe there is something great for all of us in death. I believe everybody is a soul here to learn lessons and do good. I do believe in karma. Maybe I’m crazy, but I feel like I do speak to God. .

I really like that you posted this, I’ve been thinking about my own “religion” for a long time now.

@motorik, I think I could help. the word religion when brought back to latin is along the lines of “to regulate”. so yeah, if atheism says there’s no god or what have you, it regulates that. but more important to me is it’s suffix. ism. I just can’t be a fan but, at the same I understand the lines help identify (too broadly) differences.

Stony Island (115) (@emjay) 8 years, 9 months ago ago

@motorik, yes friend, a hamburger does have ham indeed. And a mix of much more mystery meat than I can explain… But, yes, we all agree that religion is a system of beliefs. If you believe that there is no god and all that other atheist stuff, then that’s your religion, that’s your system of beliefs.

This is why I do agree to a certain point with OP, having your OWN religion is correct. But I don’t like the label ‘religion’.. I would rather just call it, expressing the perfect expression of myself. What I desire to be. I give it no judgement or label. In regards to myself, I have no religion. I consider myself to be like smoke. Adaptable, penetrating in the things I love the most, but ultimately dissolving into my environment. I do what I like. I do what I want. I go where I please…

@emjay, Well yeah i wasn’t literal on the burger joke. Same here. I simply just think it doesn’t make sense that it’s a religion. It’s the lack of one, now that freedom of having none is what makes it. I guess call it whatever it’s the same thing eh? I don’t believe in a structure, even if it’s not believing in gods.

[Hidden]
Stony Island (115) (@emjay) 8 years, 9 months ago ago

@motorik, wonderful my friend. I think you are saying it correctly, there is no structure. There is no reference point. So I second your statement, simply say you have no structure. That’s what I say about myself.

The term “atheist” however is a label. The fact that many people label themselves this and have constituted “rules” so that you can consider yourself an atheist is what makes it a religion.

I invented my own religion. It’s a sect of discordianism and I’m a pope. It’s like the 23,000 district… Fnord.
