What do you think? First impressions? Questions? Suggestions?
I still have many more things to do but I wanted to get this out as fast as possible. Top 3 things on the to-do list (which are coming very soon!) are live chat/group chat, a HEthen google map and a nicely put-together list of HEthen success stories to inspire people to take the plunge and follow their bliss :)
This is only the beginning…
@manifestation, That’s just your activity stream, assuming you’re talking about a ‘status update’? Either way, you have to use the activity stream and @mentions to talk to people publicly now.
When I ‘reply’ to somebody in one topic, and I ‘copy and paste’ this @jordan or @martijn message to another topic, will the person be notified of that as well? I mean: will it work as it is supposed to work? Or will it be seen as a ‘flaw’ because in the other topic I will not use the @reply button but I will copy and paste from the previous topic. Hope you get my point.
I think it is annoying that you cannot edit your own replies on blog post.
Sometimes I post stuff a bit fast and I cannot correct my mistakes here.
That is actually the same on Facebook in personal messages ;-). But the messages here are not personal!
Also: I don’t like how you are not logged in automatically and have to type in your username and password every time.
That is not only on the university computer, but also on my laptop and my computer at my parents (while I do save it)
@swoodmings, I’m logged in automatically, every time. It probably doesn’t work on the University computers because they probably erase all that data everyday.
Also, I do believe you can still edit your posts within 5 minutes of posting. It is made that way so people cannot go back after some time and make themselves look ‘innocent or correct’
@hollowinfinity, Well it does not work on my computer. I think it has to do with the fact that I’m running Linux?
I think it might have to do with the fact that I put my history off on my laptop. At my parents place I think I did not save the password. I’ll check it out later and let you know!
@jordan Oh it was my laptop. I put history off since I am such a Buddhistic-minded fanboy who does not like “the past” because “it does not exist”.
“Time always flows backwards. Now you are creating the values of the past. And you are buying them. All of them, you see?”
But yeah that’s not how my human life works. I have to deal with stuff around me. I put my history back on and the problem with logging in and out is solved!
EYO. So we were just talking in my discussion and I realized I can edit the OP. This needs to be a possibility. Otherwise I’d just have to keep creating tangents and only those who were actively participating in the thread would realize a deeper conversation had emerged. Do you think that OP editing can be made a fixed thing, @jordan.
@jordan, also, in addition to the other post about editing OPs, I would like to see if you might be able to make the notification feature do the following:
1) Update without having to manually refresh the page
2) Blink on the tab, such that instead of seeing “Topic: Official HE 3.0” or “High Existence” alone, it flashed “New Notification” then back to the page currently on, then flashed “New Notification” again. This could be akin to the way your Facebook tab will blink “XXX messaged you, then “Facebook,” then the message notification.
I have no idea how difficult these things would be, but to have the red “!” show up without refreshing would be REALLY nice, because otherwise I just have to keep refreshing until I get a reply I’m expecting.
@lytning91, also, the notification thing says “1” next to it, even when you have more than one notification. I had 4 different ones at one point, but it only said “1” in red next to the “!” at the top. I might suggest getting rid of the little number altogether since when you hover over it it says “You have X new mentions” anyway. Just make it light up to signify there are updates to be had or correct the number to match the ‘unviewed’ stuff
@lytning91, What is an OP?
And yeah I know the notification system is totally fucked. It came like that out of the box and the coding behind it is really messy, so I decided to deal with it later. It’s supposed to be greatly improved in the next version of Buddypress, otherwise I’ll take another look at it.
@jordan, Original Post. Like, when I create a discussion, i would like to be able to go back to that first post and edit it, such that I could make amendments if, say, I stated something poorly or someone proposed an additional question/topic that I could tack within it to expand it so new users would see where the conversation had gone and be able to get the whole story from the OP.
Ex. We are already 7 pages into this discussion on how to fix some bugs, but since you cannot edit the very first, main post for updated information, I would have to sift through all 7 pages to figure out if my issues have even been mentioned. Instead, someone could keep track of their OP and say something like
“This is a thread about fixing the sites issues.”
–sometime later on after people have spoken—
“ISSUES CURRENTLY BEING TACKLED”
You would be able to address the current situations of the topic without having to go all the way through the posts. Instead, take them as they come and add what is important or new to the table into the OP. It would probably be really helpful for you, since you have a lot of responsibility in maintenance as an owner ;)
And ASIDE FROM ALL THAT, I can deal with the notifications and I think this site is wonderfully done. Just trying to put in my two cents’ worth so I can give back!
