Pride

Many people are proud of things such as where they’re from or what race they are. I personally am only proud of things I have accomplished, like my education or getting a good job. However, many people disagree with me. I’m American, of course Americans are proud to be American. I’m Texan, Texans are very proud! I’m Hispanic, also very proud people. I just think it’s weird to be proud of something that didn’t require any work or effort. Don’t get me wrong, I like all these things about me, I just wouldn’t say I’m PROUD of them.

What is your opinion of having pride in things such as these?

This

“Pride should be reserved for something you achieve or obtain on your own, not something that happens by accident of birth. Being Irish isn’t a skill… it’s a fucking genetic accident. You wouldn’t say I’m proud to be 5’11”; I’m proud to have a pre-disposition for colon cancer.”-George Carlin

@the1paula, Pride.. bleh. Why be proud of anything? “Hey look! I’ve accomplished more then you! HA!” “Hey look! I’m German and your a Jew! HA!”
Being proud of something is defending something that is impermanent and not really yours. Another act of the ego that makes it feel special.

@the1paula, I don’t see a problem with pride as long as you’re not arrogant.

@splashartist, What if it’s something you really worked hard for? Such as a degree, a promotion, a fitness goal? I think there are some things worth being proud of.

@the1paula, Honestly, I don’t have a gripe against pride, but that being said it’s just another act that enforces ego dominate living. There’s always someone who will work harder then you or do better then you. Its the ‘individual’ that feels ‘special’ that they ‘accomplished’ something. What’s there to accomplish besides being truly free and at peace? Any act that is done by the ego only creates impermanent happiness and not lasting peace. Being proud is sort of like keeping trophies of shit you’ve done in the past. Hey look what I did 10 years ago that no one gives a shit about besides me because it makes me feel special and cradles my ego so I don’t think im worthless and haven’t done anything with ‘my’ life.
Like I said though, pride is pride I don’t really have a gripe against it. If you are proud of something then that’s totally fine, I’ve been proud of shit in the past too. I just realize now that it is something that needs to be ‘overcome’ to ease ego mind dominate living so I can experience inner peace even in a chaotic world.

@splashartist, You are demonstrating pride by dismissing pride, by thinking more highly of your beleifs and sayign that pride is something that needs to be overcome you become hypocritical of the beleifs you are preaching. (that is not saying you are going against pride just simply stating how it is by the definition of pride) think about it.

@the1paula, I agree, I believe it is a good to have pride in things you are given and cant control like your heritage if you like it, however it is not something to be proud of, if you can see what I mean by the difference :P

@garret99, If I had some sort of personal investment in those words I probably would have been offended. For sure interesting :) Language is dual by nature, therefore everything has a polar opposite when viewed from the mind. This is inescapable. Cheers! :)
