Religious Beliefs

I’m beginning to explore religion, and I would like to hear different beliefs and opinions on religions. Please feel free to share!

@michaelheyn,

I’ve seen organized religions as a means of control over masses for some years now. I think the following post examines this notion well, albeit in a… conspiracy-ist light.
Religion and Control of the Masses

Excerpt:
‘Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful’ ~ Seneca (5 BCE – 65 CE)
‘Religion is excellent stuff for keeping common people quiet’ ~ Napoleon (1769 – 1821)

It’s the same with all dogma, really. It’s fairly easy to make people believe anything as long as you do this when they’re as young as possible – which is exactly what most organized religions aim for. Religion is the most effective and destructive form of brainwashing on the planet, alongside the corporation-controlled media.

Opium of the masses. A study of a good mirror will serve you better. But if your curious, go for it. Leave no stone unturned. You will find what you need to find from them as you need to find it.

Find your own truth, that is the most important thing you can do. No other experience is more fulfilling. And constantly question your own beliefs when presented with new information. If you find something that proves what you believe to be false or not plausible, I can’t stress this enough, DON’T BE AFRAID TO CHANGE WHAT YOUR BELIEFS ARE!

Pride and stubbornness stuns growth, so be willing to change(:

My beliefs happen to coincide with the religion of New Thought, so I suppose that’s technically what I am, belief-wise.

“Every religion is true one way or another. It is true when understood metaphorically. But when it gets stuck in its own metaphors, interpreting them as facts, then you are in trouble.”

Are you familiar with Joseph Campbell? He’s a mythologist who has extensively studied the mythologies within religions all over the world. He has a lot of light to shed on the topic, I would recommend looking into his work.

@michaelheyn, There are 3 ways to manipulate a person; Fear, Desire and Principle. The best Religions do all 3 well.

@josephm, He is a very innovative Pope, I like where he is going, but is it really to remove the veil or is it just to replenish the dwindling numbers of follower?

@trek79, a mixture between being a good person and honestly trying at what he does, imo

Im clearly the minority here, but I believe I was created by a loving God, who gave me a free will to decide how I wanted to think and believe. To me, that we humans are capable of introspection & conscious thought is an amazing thing. We could be as animals, living by instinct, not realizing that we are existing – and that we could exist as more than selfish individuals is beautiful to me. Nothing is required of me but to believe…it is nothing that I can earn. The reason I can’t earn it is because nothing I could ever do – no action I take – would ever be good enough, because I’m fallible. Fallibility makes me human, and vice versa. And to me, God isn’t just this idea – this “being” or “power” with whom I cannot connect. He is my friend. He is not only within me, but he is in front of me in the future, preparing my way; he walks beside me, so that I am never alone, he’s guiding me in everything, listening to all I say & do in the present; and he goes behind me, leaving his example & his goodness behind me. I am just human – that’s all that He asks of me (he made me, after all), and the more I get to know Him through nature, through others who touch my life, through my family, my child, the more I love Him, and want to be more like Him. I just want to bring love to the world. So many people see Christians as bigots or hypocrites, but I’d rather everybody who encounters me see Jesus through me. That’s all.

I think all religion started off as a spiritual journey but was simplified which, in turn, lost a lot of the original meaning. The idea of “God” being some being in the sky was an example of this, but the way I see it, God is just the universe. A lot of religions say that there is a god essence in all things. To me, this equates to what Neil DeGrasse Tyson said that the same atoms that make up the stars and plants and everything in the universe is within us

@michaelheyn, Don’t get me wrong, manipulation has a negative connotation, like deceit, but you can manipulate people for the right reason, to do good things or to stop bad things, it happens all the time and it’s justified.

People need to be manipulated until they realise they can be manipulated, at which point they become aware and can create self determination.

@michaelheyn,

If you start to explore Christianity, I recommend the book Conversations with God. I was looking into religious perspectives on spirituality a couple weeks ago and came across this book in the library. One of the best books I’ve read. The author is a christian who starts asking God all these questions about life and God starts to reply. The god in this book gives straight forward logical answers to all this guy’s questions, and everything makes a lot of sense too. It’s pretty cool.

I wouldn’t join one of my fan clubs, they’re kind of nuts and they fight a lot. If you have any questions, bro, you now know where to find me.

Your Pal,
God

P.S
Bring weed.
