Shrooms & Panic Disorder

Taylor (@chabalamp) 8 years, 6 months ago

Hello,
I’ve been suffering from panic disorder for almost 2 years now. Its pretty bad now, with several intense panic attacks a day, I experience palpitations, nausea, fatigue as well as energy, the usual. While I’ve had anxiety, I’ve experimented with drugs as a personal choice. I’m a musician and because of the barriers due to my mental state, I find it hard to be introspective or creative at times. Tripping definitely provides a different means of thinking.

I’ve also been smoking everyday for maybe 7 months to relieve the physical symptoms of panic attacks, as well as to maybe allow myself to eat and sleep. I tripped 4 times in 2013 as well, all street LSD, but 3 of the 4 times were extremely small doses (half a tab) while the last trip was a tab and a half.

Okay, so now with that context, its probably been 5 months since my last trip, and I’m looking into tripping on shrooms for the first time next week with some friends I’ve tripped with before.

I feel like this experience will be essential, especially because I’m moving and its probably going to be a significant experience, hopefully enough to help with closure and looking at things differently.

Tldr; I wanted to know if there were any concerns for panic disorder, or if palpitations are something to worry about for shrooms. I also wanted to know some tips, maybe how shrooms differ from LSD, etc.

I’m not a doctor but it may seem risky. Could alter your neurology and raise BP, heartrate, etc.

Have you tried relaxation techniques? What has your psychiatrist recommended, and does s/he know you’re taking drugs?

I’ve been in a really bad situation. I haven’t been able to find a therapist or a psychiatrist for months, that’s actually why I’m moving Lol. I went to a primary care doctor for my anxiety in the meantime, just for tests to make sure I was okay, and to possibly get a head start on medication. I told the doctor I was smoking and about tripping and she didn’t seem to care. That’s why I feel the need to reach out here until my next appointment.

@desifemilove, I also have had no luck with relaxation techniques. I struggle mostly with the physical symptoms, so even if I’m telling myself that my panic is uneccessary, it doesn’t stop the sensations.

I totally forgot to mention a method to help with the physical symptoms -_-. Try to take a hot bath or hot shower (with hot bath temp). After a while it gets really uncomfortable and you might feel some anxiety or stress coming up, then switch to cold water. After about 10-20 sec switch back to hot again, and then back to cold, try to do it at least a few times or untill you run out of energy. This method helped me get rid of anxiety and stopped a few panic attacks as well. (the milder ones)

I heard shrooms can be more overwhelming than LSD. Last time I did shrooms it triggerd a mania with panic attacks. I still regret it, even though other times went well. I had a lot of emotions to deal with, so that probably did not help either. If you are having several intense panic attacks a day, you might get one while tripping. This will be so much worse than a normal panic attack. I myself thought I was going to die. If you are still going to do it anyway, than get some benzo’s just in case.

@mrkdoob
I was intending on getting some xanax just in case. I can probably maintain a positive mental state as long as I can control my mind to an extent. For example, LSD was pretty clearheaded. I felt totally in control and aware of everything. I actually felt like I could almost function better socially and mentally. Are shrooms like this at all?

try not to smoke high THC(psychoactive) cannabis. high cannabinoid content such as cannabidiol(non-psychoactive), and cannabinol bind to CB2 receptors located primarily in our immune system as oppose to THC binding primarily to CB1 receptors that are found in the brain and known to cause acute psychosis (anxiety). CBD content acts as an anti-psychotic and balances a marijuana high by cancelling out THC toxicity that is prevalent in narcotic-like extremely potent medicinal cannabis.

as for empathogens… any thing is possible(especially with street chemicals), sound and setting is key to therapeutic psychedelic use. start with 10-20% and consume gradually as you feel the trip starting to kick in to control how fast you come up and there are no surprises.
.5 – 2g’s of mushroom will be clear headed, 2 – 2.7 is recommended dose, and 2.7 – 4+ g’s will increasingly get more introspective

Taylor (36) (@chabalamp) 8 years, 6 months ago ago

Yeah I tend to only stick to mostly CBD if I can because high THC strains don’t help at all. Thank you for the dosing information as well.

Mark (11) (@mrkdoob) 8 years, 6 months ago ago

Btw do you mean smoking cigarettes or smoking weed? Weed can intensify your panic attacks

[Hidden]
Taylor (36) (@chabalamp) 8 years, 6 months ago ago

@mrkdoob
What are the anxious feelings like? Because I can probably maintain a positive mental outlook during the trip, as long as I can remain clearheaded.

LSD in my experience was pretty clearheaded, I had full control and knowledge of what was happening. Do shrooms differ in that sense?

Mark (11) (@mrkdoob) 8 years, 6 months ago ago

Well it were just panic attacks, not really any emotional thought behind the feeling. I just tried to “shake it off” by firing up my nervous system. It just felt like some physical disorder. And I still had some positive mental outlook, since I was in some mania (I basicly feel like a guru when in mania and I’m bipolar btw). I want to believe that I triggered some trauma in my brain which caused all the stress, but I can’t really know for sure to be honest.

Hm. What physical symptoms were you experiencing? And how do you feel today, have there been any long term consequences?

Ye HE UI is a bit confusing. Good that you have some backup. https://www.highexistence.com/topic/going-to-the-psychiatrist/ if you want to read about the physical symptons. Its quite a long story and I was basicly fcked up for a long time. I dont even know why I posted that 8 months ago. Today I’m “fine” I guess. I am still struggling with depression and restlessness from time to time, but I’m going to the chiropractor since a few weeks, it feels like it is less of a burden now. I also got the diagnosis of being bipolar now, so maybe my dark cloud will finally go away (no medication yet though)

I also find it really weird that you did not get any medication like benzo’s. If you are having several panic attacks a day, that’s a real serious issue.

Taylor (36) (@chabalamp) 8 years, 6 months ago ago

Sorry, HE on my phone is confusing. I thought it deleted my comment. I went to the emergency room for it and they gave me 3 Ativan Lol. I ended up using them all on really bad panic attacks. I’m having a follow up appt tomorrow though so I’m hoping to have some sort of medication to stop the panic attacks.

If you plan to do this, you should realize a few things;
Psychedelics can take your panic disorder to a level you can’t even imagine (been there). However, I was young, alone, and didn’t take it as seriously as I should have.

What you should do is really tell everyone you’re going to be with of your intentions, so they will be on level with you. If they aren’t that type of friend, or aren’t able to sync up with that kind of mentality, I would advise against doing it with them. You want this to be a healing / significant experience, and not just ‘have fun’, so it is important that everyone there knows that.

What has happened to me often (I have panic attacks lately) is that psychedelics will bring me there, and show me this disorder as it is – a disorder, that these thoughts don’t REALLY make sense, and that my worry is warrantless. But it can bring you there.

I would read the “How to have a great DMT trip” and do everything in that guide, as it also pertains greatly to any psychedelic experience. Clean your room, call your friends, call your parents, say thank you, tell someone you really appreciate them, enjoy the day, tell someone how you really feel, etc. Be real for a week before doing it and you will be brought to the heavens.

Don’t take ant benzones or SSRIs, that stuff is never good for you. If you do feel the need to take some with you on your trip, for security purposes, I recommend doing a little research on how psilocybin and Xanax would combine. One time I was having a panic attack due to excess THC (an edible, after not smoking for a long time), and I almost took some melatonin supplements to help me sleep, but I looked it up first and I’m very glad I didn’t.
Knowing what you’re getting into before getting into it is very good.
Knowledge is power!

Thank you for the advice! Out of curiosity, what did you find about melatonin that made you not take it?

[Hidden]
Anonymous (1) (@) 8 years, 6 months ago ago

It is sometimes combine the two for interesting to intense dreams, and I really wasn’t down for that at the time. I have thought about it again when weed has become a normality again in my life to see what its like. Also, I should say that pharmaceuticals have their place, but I believe its best to try to avoid for more traditional methods. I also heard from someone who had a bad shroom trip and had bad anxiety afterwards, then a few months later took a very small dosage and had a good time, and the anxiety vastly decreased.
Good luck with your adventures! (:
Good luck with your adventure!

Why are you taking acid so many times in the first place?
Considering the fact that you’ve taken them so many times, your not enlightening yourself to reality, but it appears your merely trying to escape it.

[Hidden]
Taylor (36) (@chabalamp) 8 years, 2 months ago ago

I was more so trying to escape myself. I was taking very small doses and working my way to eventually a tab and a half, which is still not that much. Each trip I had helped me a lot with my social anxiety, being able to be in touch with my creativity, and as a musician, that’s very important. That said, I had a weird trip so I’m getting therapy and won’t be doing psychedelics until I’m recovered.

Late reply. You may want to stop mind altering drugs all together. Your exchanging temporary relief, for long term problems.

My friend (19,female,100lbs) suffers from intense anxiety and panic attacks (ptsd from car accident) and she has done mushrooms many times and considers them her favorite substance (besides weed). She will take a half dose of Klonopin or xanax prior and have a full dose on hand in case tensions rise. She has had bad experiences but from what I can tell, the environment was not controlled at all in those instances. Control your environment and you basically secure a good experience. Coincidentally I have been trying to get her to try LSD but she has parallel concerns to yours.

I will usually not eat for at least 5 hours before I take mushrooms and I will also take a dose of pepto. With that combination I’ve prevented nausea from mushrooms, mescaline, ayahuasca, and ketamine. For me the best thing to eat on shrooms is fruit. Very refreshing and it hydrates you as you eat. Smoking weed on mushrooms smooths out the edges and I will rarely trip without at least a joint. For me the come up to acid is warmth on the surface of my body that spreads but with shrooms its warmth from within that grows. The trip depends on the dose and the strain but if you get them from the streets they will most likely be a boring cube like PE or something. In the days I bought from the streets I would start with a half eighth in case the potency was misjudged, give it 30-40mins (empty stomach) and judge from there. Most every time I would end up eating the other half.

Inspect the mushrooms and see if you can see any discoloration (from the regular fungus) It would be an obvious color like black, this could be contamination from the cultivation process which actually contain neuro toxins that will give you headaches and increase your chances on having a “bad trip”. Mushrooms are not at “clean” as acid. My motor skills are sharper on acid than mushrooms ordinarily though not significantly. At home or in public? Inside or outside? The ideal scenario for first time in my opinion would be at home and outside. By home I mean a house, could be one of your friends. Not always possible but for me its ideal.

This is extremely helpful, especially the pepto tip! As for your friend, what helped me with psychedelics is that I gradually eased myself on. I took half a tab the first 3 times, all spaced out between months. I felt that was the best course of action for my anxiety, I work my way up to different levels of mind alteration so I can handle it each time. Also, i find that lsd nearly eliminates any social anxiety I’m having. I hope she finds that helpful.

To reply to your comment on how shrooms may differ from LSD, you are probably becoming aware, and should be aware, that almost all drugs are subjective in the sense they are different for everyone! Someone here mentioned that shrooms are apparently more overwhelming than LSD. While this may be true for some people, I can say that after trying both LSD and shrooms, LSD was the less enjoyable experience for me.

I wont go into details, but for me, I have had two good trips on shrooms and one bad trip on LSD. I found the LSD trip to be a lot more physical in the sense I was experiencing sensations (some good… mostly bad) throughout my body whereas I did not experience this with shrooms. As well, I did not remember much from the peak of my LSD trip whereas I was able to account almost everything from all of my shroom trips.

I have only tried LSD once and the setting was, in retrospect, not that great so I too have a very subjective opinion.

Anyways, I hope everything goes well and that you make progress on your panic :)

Hey there!

I love tripping and I believe that it can be an awesome experience for creativity and exploring yourself. However, if you are suffering from obvious previous psychological issues I would strongly consider laying off the stuff a while and find a GOOD therapist ( none of that prescribe and forget mentality) that can really help you get through your problems.

I am not an expert by any means, but my research of psychedelics has led me to believe that while substances like LSD and psilocybin may be harmless, there is actually a pretty serious risk with other preexisting conditions. Your risk of things like HPPD and negative flashback events shoots up significantly with higher dose and repeated use.

This is pretty unlikely though and if you feel you can handle it I say go for it, most people report the mushroom trip to be more dreamy and often have more closure to the one you get on Lucy. If you feel comfortable doing the sunshine there is little to suggest you will freak out on shrooms unless you overdo the dosage.

Definitely try to find someone you can be honest with about your moop and hallucinogen use having people there that understand you can mean the difference when you are spiraling into a bad experience.

Study up on your mushies! (I’m sure you know all about erowid and all those wonderful resources)

I wish you the best of trips!

-Ron
