I just want to get a general idea of how many people in this community believe in the concept of a soul.
Personally, I’ve grown to see the world in a very science based way. While i do not accept the materialistic view of science (where the only thing that exists is matter and energy, we’re made of billions of atoms, and our brain is a bundle of neurons, ect…), i also lack any belief in spirituality. I meditate on a daily basis, but in the end i interpret that through science. I accept that the consciousnesses is vastly complex and can’t possible be the direct result of matter and energy- this is probably the closest that i come to believing in a soul. And still, i generally accept that consciousness is based on very complex string theory and such that we don’t understand. I don’t guess i simply do not believe in a soul. I Know we humans are complex, but i think science can interpret it all one day.
What is everyone else’s view? If you do believe in the concept of a soul, how would you explain it?
I view the Soul as what many people view as their “higher selves”. A more energetic being that can function on many different realms, as well as this one. When the soul is combined with the ego, we become human.
On a side note, I view ego to be separate from personality though. I do believe souls have their own traits that make them unique, but the ego adds additional traits that are obtained from environment and life’s experience.
@dragonsong, I agree, I also feel that the ego is a separate entity. Initially, our minds are made of the combination of the soul and ego (earthly anchor) but once we separate the two we are left with our original soul and can transcend to higher states.
scientifically/metaphysicaly speaking i beleive we all share the one soul, at the highest level we are all connected to the original source “god” or whatever you wanna call it, you share a soul with the ground you stand on and the air you breathe beacause it is all within that original “godlike” source dimension. does that make sense? and after this short human videoclip of a life is over, and you “die” you may show up anywhere in gods existence from on earth as another human body, or directly to that godly dimension and anywhere in between as some kind of other dimensional being, your mind can create absolutely any kind of existence life after life, but your “soul” will always trickle back to the source
@flyingrhino, Separation of these two aspects are good for transcendance into higher states, but sadly many people believe that they need to separate these two aspects on this realm as well. Sadly that causes many people to miss the whole point. If we are indeed Souls that are here to have a human existence, separation of the very thing that makes us human (ego) causes us to miss the point to why we are here. What we need to do is bring both our Soul (spiritual/energetic selves) aspects and ego (human aspects) into balance instead of making the common mistake of using the ego as a scapegoat for all the things that we don’t like (fear, anger ect). If we do use this as a scapegoat and somehow succeed in separating ourselves from our ego, what will we do when we find other aspects in ourselves that we don’t like? We will keep on dividing ourselves until there will be nothing left, or we will fail initially and feel like failures.
@dragonsong, Everything I’ve been taught about the ego implies that it is the cause for liking or disliking oneself. If a soul sees a problem within itself, it seeks to fix it and has no ill opinion of it. No bias, per se. I do, however, like what you said about having ego as the point of existing here. I’ve never thought about it that way. And I also agree with bringing them into balance.
@kaliholiday, In my view: So we are made of atoms, the ‘soul’ then would be in every single atom in my body. Every single one filled with a concentrate of all your thoughts, experiences, and emotions. Each has two sides, good(positive) and bad(negative). You then give and take atoms with people and things you come in contact with, losing some and gaining some.
A Soul is the combination of all the attributes of the atoms in an organism or item; in real time.
