The future of self-expression in the professional work environment.

I would really love to gauge my septum and ears, and have multiple tattoos….. but I plan on being a realtor and civil engineer. I wonder if as my generation (the millenials) enter the professional work force will This be acceptable in that type of enviornment? Because it kind of pisses me off that people are expected to look a certain way to avoid being judged and make a living. I would love to have a Mohawk and tattoos and piercings and dress however I want and still have respect in whatever industry I’m in. But it’s not just companies and bosses that need to change its the clients mindset too. What do all the HEthans have to say about this?

@iambrian, I think you should work with people that have a similar style to you.

@iambrian,

Tricky situation. Which would you value more: the style or career? Have you thought about other career options? Have you considered others ways of expressing your personality? Also, have you considered that you personality/style might change? We’re constantly evolving as conscious entities.

But employers expectations about how we dress could radically change in the future. Look at software companies, like Google and Facebook for instance. They seem to be quite lax about how employees dress and I think Mark Zuckerberg has proved you don’t need to wear a suit and tie in order to have successful business meetings.
