Essentially, I’ve never had thought, said, or done anything original.
Everything we experience is a learned process.
We learn to what to think, what to say and what to do.
Does anyone else find this mildly depressing?
if you contemplate what you take in then you create new connections and unique ones as well.
Have you ever heard of the trivium? It`s a way of learning that was initially taught in medieval universities and is now taught in elite schools. It is comprised of Grammar, Logic and Rhetoric and it is the correct way to learn because with grammar you can efficiently absorb information, with logic you can efficiently process and with rhetoric you can efficiently express the processed info. This is the way to develop free will.
you find it depressing that you know how it works so now you can basically learn whatever you want?
nah, but then again, if this is realization is still fresh i can understand why you feel that way, but, what you now understand if applied to your personal learning process in general, will allow you to learn anything
How would it be depressing? It’s just reality. If you feel something’s wrong about that, the problem is with you, not with reality. Jus sayin.
And yknow, you can still be the first to understand something, or the first to put something into words, and so on.
And no matter what, there’s no person who’s had the same thoughts, feelings, and experiences as you. Everyone really is unique, although we’re identical at the core.
@francina, Maybe every single thought that every person has ever had is original. That is the way I see it. The subject matter of your thoughts may be similar to others but no one has or has ever had your brain. So in that way every thought must be original.
“If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” -Isaac Newton
Yes, when it comes down to it we are all collective manifestations of history. Is that damning or beautiful? It’s all about perspective. Learn from the past and create something new.
“Even in literature and art, no man who bothers about originality will ever be original: whereas if you simply try to tell the truth (without caring twopence how often it has been told before) you will, nine times out of ten, become original without ever having noticed it.”
C. S. Lewis
I copied that.
As a graphic designer, it has been very hard to accept that I am not a fake if I draw inspiration from others work and experiment with elements I find elsewhere. Most of the time you’ll realize that the ideas you took from people take you down a path that ends up looking nothing like the stuff you got your ideas from.
I’ve occasionally thought that there is no such thing as an original thought or idea as you always take influence from past events. However after thinking about it I think that every thought or idea is original as you have taken in the information and interpreted it in your own way. The result is something that will never have been thought and will never be thought again. Lots of similar ones, but no two the same. And isn’t that the great thing about humanity, we are constantly improving on what has gone before, if we never took what has gone before us and made it better then we would never progress.
Haha, you guys are the best! I’m not actually depressed about it. That was probs the wrong word. It was just after having pulled an all nighter on one of my design concepts, and realising how much influence architects and artists had on my work. But i think its definitely subjective, this concept of ‘originality’. Because the work is all my own… but coming from other’s ideas. IDK. it was just a highexistency moment in my morning.
I love the world. I love you. I love me. Like @brokenthrough said though, its all about perspective.
thats what i’m sayingggg @manimal, we’re all identical at the core! thats all i meant by it.
