love is a chemical process in the brain that makes us have sex and therefore reproduce
love is a beautiful state of mind, attached to a person you think of as perfect, giving meaning to your life.
Be aware of both definitions, know both of them are equally true, and when you find yourself dealing with love, choose the definition that helps you most :)
this is a question that has really been on my mind lately
though i cant add to much to this conversation yet, i recently read some of alan watt’s ideas on love and they are fascinating
one thing he says is that ‘the relationship of self to other is the complete realization that loving yourself is impossible without loving everything defined as other than yourself.’
he makes this connection to man’s illusion that he is a ‘separate ego in a bag of skin,’ separate from the universe, and shows why this builds a contempt for everything outside man’s skin bc he feels separate from everything when he is really an integral part of it
he says that’s why we have ‘man vs. nature’ today, man fighting against himself (man is nature), destroying himself, because ‘the alternative to self-love is self-destruction’
here’s a transcript of one of his chapters on love if you’re interested in his ideas: http://progessnotperfection.blogspot.com/2009/08/spectrum-of-love-by-alan-watts.html
and if you search “love” or “what is love” in the search bar here on HE you can find lots of other stuff too.
