What is the meaning of life?

Melissa (@melzmac) 8 years, 9 months ago

Here it is… the question, “What is the meaning of life?” I have been thinking a lot recently about who I am, and where I am going in my life. Sometimes i feel like others are holding me back, ie. the government, parents, society etc. I know i want to make a difference and do something with my life, rather than just go to school, college, work, make money and live in this corrupt society we live it, but what really is our purpose for being here? What do you think you were meant to do with your life?

@melzmac, the majority of books that have had the biggest impact on my live all tend to agree that the meaning/purpose of life is to CREATE it as you go. There are no rules, no guidelines, no expectations, simply a HUGE playing field in which to experience whatever you want, do whatever you want, have whatever you want, and meet whoever you want =)

Have a nice day!

The meaning of life is ultimately what you make of it but that you figure out on your own. The Ultimate Meaning of life, the one that involves everyone (not just “What’s the meaning of MY life?”) is that you make the most of it WITH everyone else. Everyone is ultimately going to look for their own happiness, but collectively it’s everyone’s job to make it easy for everyone else. This would mean living in accordance with virtue, ethics, morality, and all the other awesome shit that comes with living. (A lot of it can be found within philosophy). Its one thing to be awesome on your own. It’s another (and greater) thing to be awesome and help everyone else be awesome, too.

Meaning of Life…now that’s a classic. In my experience I have found it helpful to sum it up as such: “There is no given meaning to life; you yourself have to give it one. And you have no given identity; you must forge one for yourself”.

I think this is key because I find that our identity, who we are, and the meaning of life, are necessarily connected. I think the meaning of life is to express yourself and grow and evolve yourself – your unique self – as fully and as wholly as possible. That’s it. Just be you, to the fullest. That’s why we are on this Earth. What that means – whether it’s helping people, creating something, working for a certain cause – whatever stems from being who you truly are. But it starts with just being who you are – no fronts, no posturing. And that is truly a challenge. So The meaning of life is not intelletual or definitional, it cannot be defined, it can only be expressed through your individual uniqueness. If you are being your best self, then you are living out the meaning of life.

@melzmac, You capitalize on what you are good at, work on areas you can improve and disregard the rest, you do your best at this while trusting what makes sense to you, questioning where you can expand understanding and not wasting too much valuable time on things you just can’t seem to wrap your head around.
You know when something makes sense to you just as you know if you’re behaving with love, maybe it’s the same thing, but the meaning of my life is somewhere in this post.

@melzmac, Speaking as an individual; the possibilities are endless and each one is subjective. Each person must find something that gives their life meaning. One cannot say that another’s pursuit to find meaning is bad, evil, corrupt or immoral; this would be unreasonable.
Speaking as an objective observer; Pro-creation is the purpose of being alive.

To have fun and enjoy ourselves, there is no meaning to live as we are here due to blind chance from very slim odds and so there is no set objective, just do what makes you happy and use the time you have as best you can.

I’ve been reflecting on this for quite a long time and here is some of the conclusions I’ve come to:

Some people say that they have their own meaning with their lives – for example to win the olympics or become a rock star. But if you think that this is the meaning of life, then you don’t understand the question. One can’t chose his own meaning of life. The meaning of life is something absolute – it has to apply for EVERY life on earth. What these people are talking about is merely their own goals or maybe their own purpose. But ones purpose have to go outside oneself, so perheps not even.

Now some people claim that their beliefs are the meaning of life. Beliefs can be religions, ideologies, pilosophies and so on. We are getting closer to the big “Meaning of life” but we are still not there. Beliefs talk about everybody’s life, but beliefs are man-made, and the meaning of life has to go outside humanity. Beliefs can possibly be the purpose of humanity. Even if the religion is inspired by God, it is still not the meaning of life, because it doesn’t answer the ultimate question:

What is the point of existence? WHY does anything exist? WHY do I have a soul? WHY does a bunch of particles come to life become me? WHY is there even such a thing like particles? And time? And space? And eventually: WHY does God exist?

Not “why” like in “how does this scientificly work?”, but “why” like in “what is the point of it?”

What is the point of anything at all? That can get your mind working!

You have to define the question before you know what you are trying to answer. The answer will only make sense if you know the question. But no-one knows the REAL question and there is no way to find out. I am certain that my current view isn’t deep enough.

Ofcause this only works if we assume that there actually is a meaning of life.

@melzmac, there is no meaning of life. i mean, the meaning of life is the same as meaning of a rock. everything else is your personal view.

@facets,
I’m glad you brought this explanation about. I was wondering if someone would expand beyond one’s individual meaning of life, and articulate on the concept as a whole, on a larger scale of things. What if there was a way to discover that mind boggling question? What if it wasn’t so impossible to grapple some overall purpose? What if it just took more than one mind to grasp it? Imagine the purpose a battery serves. It’s job is to energize, but it often takes more than one battery to operate. Perhaps we need several minds with developed awareness to understand something so complex as the meaning of life. Perhaps we need to mentally evolve as a species to get closer to understanding. Maybe it’s not so impossible. Maybe the individual meaning of life, as everyone was referring to, is only so significant because it causes us to be true to ourselves, thus developing a better understanding of who we are, and giving us a better shot at becoming aware of things on a larger scale. Perhaps that’s the purpose of existence, to understand why it exists. Perhaps then, we can be in a constant state of euphoria. Who knows? I don’t want to weigh out the possibility of understanding the meaning. I would like to find like minded people who are also in search of understanding the cosmos. We need to plug in our brains to an outlet to present clarification.

@bono95zg, Can you elaborate, on ‘no’?

@bodhibolster60, when u have a meaning of life, that automatically makes it false because why would that be the right one. My meaning, it could be the stupidest meaning ever, is as true as your meaning is. So either all meanings are equaly true or there is none.

Rob (75) (@facets) 8 years, 9 months ago ago

@bodhibolster60, Your analogy intrigues me. But if we all worked as “batteries,” then who would be aware of the actual meaning? We are limited to the perspective of one person.
But I do agree, and your analogy is basically the root of philosophical discussion.

I find this chart is helpful is ascertaining a personal world-view:
http://www.visualnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/worldview_survey.jpg

I personally subscribe to a mixture of nihilism and existentialism. The reason I don’t believe in any inherent “meaning” is because a meaning to life implies a higher power of some sort. And with a higher power comes a universal morality, which I don’t believe exists.

@melzmac, its simple..but the mind makes it real complex.. you are just a descendant of that green bacteria which brought life first on earth. we are a spectacular form of energy. if u could realy c,this systematic world works like a machine..a child is droped in a school den college, den offices..system manipulates ur mind..dont follow ur mind..but ofcourse u gotta do smthing for existence..that should be anything of ur interest only…but remember ur body is ur temple..if u understand ur body u understand the whole universe,,..ur purpose of this life is create and retain as much energy as possible..you will never die..coz u r just a form of energy..love nature..its urs u r connected wid it,,ur mind doesnt let u c dat..dats y they say open ur eyes..chillax..

Bodhi Bolster (7) (@bodhibolster60) 8 years, 9 months ago ago

@facets, Does a higher power necessarily suggest a universal morality? Isn’t it possible that morality is something that doesn’t exist on transcended planes of existence? And even if you have a general acceptance, and choose not to depict a ‘meaning’ of sorts, I have always found that even the concept of purposelessness that Nihilism portrays still has a shadow of questioning and curiousity behind it. The simple understanding that there is something rather than nothing, is fascinating. Even if the world went about in an arbitrary spout of random purposeless endeavor, that in its own is compelling enought to further question. I feel as though are brains cannot cognitively fathom what a higher power even means at these levels of mental solitude. A few double A batteries could not fathom powering something as large as a rocket. So, as individuals, how would we accurately ponder the creator, source, or even reason that nature so perfectly exists? Maybe it’s beyond our mental capacity at this mental level of existence. Perhaps we need to evolve, and understand the significance in human mental connectivity to truly grasp any truth or divinity that may or may not exist.

@bodhibolster60, why and how does something even exists is the question. giving meaning to something is so human like. there are no meanings of anything.
